Amazing and unique experience! Francine is an incredible hostess, making sure you enjoy 100% of the time spent on this beautiful private Island. Prepare to be charmed by each of the playful monkeys and their different personalities. You will want to bring back one in your luggage! Oh, the meals are soooo delicious as well and the loyal staff very courteous! I already can't wait to go back 😊

Francine has really created a magical vacation destination @ Urraca Private Island! We stayed two nights in February 2020 before continuing to other Bocas Del Toro resorts. We added the special Sunset dinner (food was amazing our entire stay) and His & Hers massages which were great and very relaxing. This was our 25th Wedding Anniversary celebratory trip and Francine made sure our stay felt very romantic. Loved spending time with the monkeys, specially Mika, the very-male-friendly monkey who became my husband’s friend 🐒. We can’t wait to return and next time, introduce our daughter to this amazing little island location. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about our stay and highly recommend it!

This Little private Island was for us as close to paradise as you can get. The whole experience was just wonderful. Booking was easy with Francine, she organized a water taxi for us and we left the “normal world behind” to spend a few great days on this little patch of mangroves. The huts are basic, but lovingly decorated and very clean - The view spectacular! Francine is an amazing woman and a wonderful host, she takes care of everything and make sure everybody is happy. She rescued a number of monkeys who also live on the island and are very friendly. Of course, she knows tons about them!
She can also organize a variety of day tours, we chose spearfishing with indigenous fishermen and a trip to the bat cave. Both were great. We wished we had more time to stay longer and enjoy more!
You can also swim, snorkel or kayak around the island, just from the deck of your hut.
The food was also just wonderful, nice choices and very fresh seafood of course. You have to try the lobster!
Make sure you stay a few days to fully enjoy the place.

This is a truly unique experience. It's majestic, but also earthy. This is truly an eco resort. Built into mangroves and designed to help rehabilitate and save abandoned monkeys.
Let's start with the room accommodations. No, there is not air conditioning, but you adjust fast. Each room has privacy and a beautiful view. The rooms are cleaned daily and you get daily free roaming monkey time! The bathrooms are clean and there is nice hot water for showers.
The food is amazing. I can't describe how fresh the food is and welcoming the cooks and staff are. We brought a group of 16 friends, many of which had not met before, to spend a well together here and it's been amazing. Each morning you can go for a glassy swim around the island or paddle or kayak. There is a perfect structure to welcome sea birds for your viewing right off the island as well.
Activities that are a must:
1. Bat caves: this is a real farm, a great family, such a unique ride into the mangroves and a hike that shouldn't be missed. All trails would rate medium.
2. Gary's chocolate farm: he's from LA and a bit grumpy with kids, but totally worth the visit. He's doing great work here for the local tribe and supporting that is awesome.
3. Red Frog Beach is a very nice reprieve for a day with a pool and drinks on the beach.

Bring games, be flexible, and rent your own private island!

Francine has done an amazing job in creating this fabulous resort. We stayed for 4 nights and the food, drinks and conversation were truly memorable and something we will cherish forever. The New Year’s Eve lobsterfest and fireworks extravaganza was spectacular. To waking up with the sun rising over the water to the great staff. Francine created a magical relaxing experience we will never forget

When there with my 65yo mom and a friend. The island is completely isolated from the outside world so it is perfectly COVID-safe. You live very close to nature, watching the tropical fishes doing their things in the water below you while you are doing yours. I was able to keep in touch with my staff with the more-than-decent internet connection. It is incredible to have this kind of interactions with monkeys! The locals Gnobe Indians pass by every day delivering fresh fish and lobster. I give 300% satisfaction to Francine and her aid Elisia for the delicious cooking. Thanks again, I recommend!

After reading previous reviews I feel called to share a disclaimer before going on about my positive experience: mitigate expectations by knowing this is an eco resort! More emphasis on “eco” than “resort.”

My partner and I stayed at Urraca in March but it’s better to be late than never in leaving a much deserved review of the absolutely lovely stay we had.

If you are someone like me (who often needs a vacation from your vacation because you pack in all the action possible when you go away) know that you will actually feel extremely rested and rejuvenated leaving Urraca--it is the ultimate relaxation destination. While I often enjoy planning the details of a trip (meals, drinks, sites, museums, shopping), I realized at Urraca that that is a mental load! Having a delicious and affordable meal plan, on a literal island made of mangroves, and with minimal--but really fun and worthwhile--excursions is the perfect formula to staying present and enjoying a sense of peace. All you need to worry about is getting there--but Francine is very helpful in situating transport to and from the ecoresort.

I notice that there are other beautiful overwater bungalows popping up throughout Bocas, but the service provided at Urraca (especially at that price) is invaluable and leaves an impression not to be forgotten. You should know that, Urraca, the name of the ecoresort was originally the name of an Indigenous (Ngäbe) chief that valiantly and victoriously battled the Spanish conquistadors of the 16th century. This tribute feels particularly important because of the culturally rich--but systematically marginalized--presence of indigenous folks in the region. The majority of staff at the ecoresort are of the Ngäbe tribe and I would be remiss not to extend my deep appreciation for all the hospitality extended to us by Federico, Elisia, Elsa, Oscar, Chito, Lionel, and Lazaro. Ni bori bitita köin!! (I hope I got that right).

The food and drinks were delicious, the accommodations were clean and charming, the monkeys were cute, and the sunrises and stargazing were unreal. Pro tip: allow the sun to wake you up in the early morning hours and go out on your personal terrace to admire all the amazing marine life that relish in dawn’s quiet. If you plan on drinking late into the night, please consider bringing a bottle from the mainland or purchasing one at Urraca’s bar during the day so staff can canoe home!

If you can’t tell, we can’t wait to go back.

My wife and I spent a weekend here for my 70th birthday, it was to say the least a most memorable birthday. The design of the resort situated within a mangrove is awesome. It became a break of total relaxation, every minute of each day was a joy and a pleasure. The monkey's were incredible, the staff fantastic and the food...exquisite in both presentation and taste. As for our hostess Francine, her love and dedication to the care and rescue of these primates, falls within the realms of Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall. We are grateful to Francine and her staff for what she does and the memories we took away with us. We recommend this break to anyone...you will not regret it.

Live a unique experience on an island that is 100% self-sufficient in water, electricity... and happiness. Share the daily life of monkeys... See the time spent between sky, sea and mangroves! Share delicious meals prepared by the incredible Élicia, Chef Ngöbé, and her team (especially the lobsters...) and meet inspiring people. Keep busy by making excursions as magnificent as Zapatillas, enriching by visiting the Chocolate Farm or making bread with the Ngöbés or filled with emotion by seeing hundreds of baby turtles come out of their sand nests...

The welcome from Francine, this radiant woman full of attention to her guests and her staff, largely contributed to giving me and my family a stay that we will not soon forget!

If you haven't booked yet, it's because you're not ready to experience this happiness!
