Given our flight arrived in the evening, they offered to have food ready for us in our kitchen for when we arrived. This was so incredibly sweet of them. If you have a late arrival flight, I would ask if this is an option. It was really hard to find open restaurants nearby at night when we first arrived.
They offer an evening meal for 25 euros per person. This is on par with the nicer restaurants we visited. The food was really good (marlin over sauerkraut made with green papaya instead of cabbage, with bananas, ice cream, and chocolate for dessert). This was one of the best meals I had on the island! Honestly, after sunset, there isn't as much to do, so you may as well head back to eat here and make an early night of it!
The villas are not air-conditioned. The have lots of windows, and a fan. There is mosquito netting around the bed. It took a bit to get used to but we did fine. We also learned not to leave any food out as the windows do not have screens, if you have anything at all, secure it in the fridge in the kitchen!
They don't serve breakfast or coffee, if you drive into town there is a boulangerie (bakery) where you can get cafe au lait and pastries. Not all of the places we visited had coffee in the mornings, so just be warned. There is a coffee maker in the kitchen, but given we were just 2 people, it didn't make sense to go buy coffee.
Rentals here are different than a typical a hotel room. You will need to bring (or purchase) your own bath soap and shampoo. (We didn't realize this!) There are instructions (in french) asking you to do much of the house cleaning prior to your departure (sweeping, taking out trash and recycling, giving the linens to them at the reception desk). Given the low cost, I thought this was reasonable, I just wish I would have known earlier!
Finally, because you'll sleep with the windows open, I really recommend bringing ear plugs, in case there are noisy guests. The outdoor kitchens are wonderful, but people tend to congregate in them late at night to drink and the noise carries.
One more thing - there is no wifi and while we could get text messaging, we could not get data service in this area.
They helped us with JD car rental and the instructions to Villa Rose Caraibes were very comprehensible. The grounds are very inviting, with a pond, a tree house and a beautiful garden. The apartments were close to each other, yet there was plenty of privacy because of the way they were set up. The swimming pool looked great and was a nice option to use on hot days. The views were stunning from the pool.
Our apartments were ready, clean and quaint. There were a lot of mosquitoes, so the net over our bed was very necessary. The beds were not the most comfortable of beds we have slept in. The kitchenettes were basically stocked. There were cleaning materials, there was some salt and pepper and oil for cooking. I thought the little holders for your bread crumbs were a great idea to attract the little sparrows and finches, but not everyone might like that. Up to you to fill them.
The location is great. It's quite hidden and off the beaten path, but close to for example the Maison du Cacao, the Musee de Cafe and the botanical garden and some beaches, both quiet and busy and waterfalls. The closest small village is Pointe Noire and the closest big village is Deshaies (pronounce Dehe). It's a reasonable distance from hiking up Guadeloupe's highest summit: La Soufriere. It is, far off to real touristy beaches and promenades that are on the other side of the island: Grande Terre. If that's your shtick, keep looking.
The best part of La Villa Rose Caribes, however, are Patrick et Christiane. I have never met any bed and breakfast/gite owner more accommodating as them. Every evening Chris cooks an amazing three course meal with local products for a decent price and sharing experiences with fellow travellers creates an atmosphere of belonging and homeliness that we haven't found anywhere else. You must, however, be able to converse somewhat in French. I can attest that my French has improved immensely!
I would recommend La Villa Rose Caraibes to anyone who likes serenity, nature, independence and a sense of community at the same time!
The bungalows are well-equipped, dinners at the terrace overlooking the garden and the coast were facinating. There are two local stores and a bakery in the village. A car is a must.
The owners are really friendly, but the communication would be quite difficult without basic knowledge of French.
I would recommend this rental to all categories, even with small children. Very nice experience.
Our hosts could not have been more friendly and helpful. Patrick speaks only French but somehow we were able to communicate. His wife, Chris, speaks English and is responsible for the cooking. All guests are welcome to join them for dinner whenever they want and the food is both tasty and varied. You have the feeling of being part of the family. They were extremely helpful with booking tours for us and recommending "secret tips" for beaches, waterfalls and small restaurants to visit.
Tourism is still relatively low which gives you the chance to experience the local life and friendliness of the people of Guadeloupe. Hopefully we will get the chance to stay with them again.
English only speakers, be advised – it is helpful to know a bit of the French language visiting Guadeloupe. We encountered few people who had working knowledge of English. That being said, nearly all we met were helpful and friendly, and we were able to communicate well enough to meet our needs. Owners Patrick and Christiane patiently and earnestly work to communicate in English, but it is a challenge for them, as much as our limited French was a challenge for us.
They are most hospitable and offer a friendly table d’hote every evening. We took advantage of eating at their table most nights – good food, good company – a relaxed dinner with 8 to 12 guests at one long table. Also, at dinners in the evening, in the week we stayed we were fortunate there were a few English speakers, and they politely and generously made a point to include us in cordial and interesting conversations. But, it is possible you may find yourself at a dinner with no English speakers, so be prepared for limited participation in conversation with others at the table.
We arrived around 9:30 in the evening, and Christiane had prepared a meal for us to have when we arrived, which was in our bungalow refrigerator and we heated up in the microwave. We really appreciated that after a long day of traveling. You should let her know if you will need this when you arrive. You will receive a small breakfast the first morning – after that you are on your own. Patrick will sit down with you on the first morning, and give you some advice on what to see on Basse Terre.
One reviewer mentioned no wi-fi. We had wi-fi in the bungalow, though it was a bit slow in the evening when there were more people online. There is a TV in the bungalow, if you enjoy French TV.
All in all, we had a very relaxing week at Villa Rose Caraibes, and plan to return again next year for a winter get away.
Very friendly table d'hôte!!
Don’t hesitate to book!!!
You can really go there without any hesitation.
Corine and Lionel.
In the morning, we could observe the sugar bowls at breakfast as well as the sea through the window of the small kitchen area.
We also enjoyed the excellent dishes prepared by Christiane and Patrick at the table d'hôtes (just writing it, I still savor the wonderful vanilla sauce!!!).
Marylise and Jean Jacques
