A truly special place to stay, away from all the 'hub bub' down a quiet road, set amongst beautiful old trees. We needed a break after having moved home and we surely got that and more. Great personally cooked breakfasts, comfortable bed and our bedroom was the ground floor suite, could not have asked for more. We can recommend this...

once in a while a special person or place comes into your life when you least expect it and this is true on both accounts. I arranged a last minute surprise getaway for my partners birthday and after reading excellent reviews for Thornton Lodge decided to stay there. What a beautiful experience from the moment the lovely Vanessa came down...

oh, thank you! It made my eyes dewy - it was so wonderful to meet you and felt like I'd known you ages, not just met you. To have you be so enthusiastic about everything and so protective is really lovely. I've finished for the summer now, on a high with another set of truly delightful guests that left this...

From the moment we parked the car Vanessa the owner was great. Welcome tray of tea & biscuits, lovely room, really comfortable bed, full selection tea, mixed filter & instant coffe & biscuits In the room. The breakfast was very well cooked, good choice on offer, nothing was too much bother for Vanessa. Hotel very clean, and an amazing house....

thank you so much :) It was really lovely to meet you both, especially after having to change dates, etc. It's also such a relief to have a review again off people who are happy that staying with me gets them exactly what I offer on my website. This is not a boutique hotel - it's not an hotel of...

We spent 3 nights in this delightful house, owned by Vanessa and her family. The house is very large and our bedroom was enormous . Everything was of a high standard with antique furniture , comfortable bed, large TV and everywhere was spotless. The breakfasts were very generous and well cooked. Vanessa was very friendly and tried to suggest places...

Well located to visit the Dales of Yorkshire but just off the main route to Hawes in a quiet village. You need a car but there are plenty of pubs for meals and Vanessa the owner is very helpful. Our room was perfect and we had a delightful stay with all you could want for breakfast.

My second attempt at a review on my stay. I requested my last review, and associated comments from Vanessa, be removed. Trip kindly agreed. Very pleasant stay in Room 2. The Accessible, ground floor, room. I was attracted more by the size of this room than I was by the fact it was Accessible. Room 1 , a smaller ground...

Its some time since we booked this property but I feel I must add a review. I booked the whole place for my wife's 60th birthday. It was quite simply the best weekend party we have ever had. The place is amazing and Vanessa is quite simply the best hostess you could ever wish to find.

Hello Bruce, what a wonderful surprise to see your review! I remember your wife's birthday celebration with such fondness. I did you those cupcakes and tea loaf for arrival and you had champagne and canapés before dinner. It must be some time ago because I think it was my eldest boy who helped me serve you all. It's lovely that...

I could not have found a better place to celebrate my 70th birthday together with a group of friends. Vanessa gave us all a warm welcome and coped admirably with the pressure of taking care of a full house over the three days we stayed. Thornton Lodge is a fabulous building with large superbly furnished rooms with attention paid to...

Thank you so much for your kind words. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and am so very pleased everything was to your liking. Sometimes I think I must be mad to do these group gatherings, but it makes me so happy when they go well, and the house was actually built for entertaining so it's wonderful when it gets used...

We arrived to a very warm welcome from the owner who checked us in to room number 5 which was really lovely. A very large room with a four poster bed and views of the gardens around the stately home. Hi Rachel, thank you so much for your kind words, especially as I made an exception to my 2 night stay rule and welcomed you into my home for a one night Saturday night stay. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Thornton Lodge is a family home in Upper Wensleydale. Vanessa lives there with her family and offers b&b during the summer. She has a 5 star gold rating from Visit Britain and has been accepted as a prestigious Wolsey Lodge. All rooms are different, pleasantly decorated with very comfy beds and nice views and there are lots of pictures on her website. She cooks a really nice breakfast and can sometimes cook an evening meal for guests by arrangement. The house has some wifi but as the last one on the exchange in a rural area it's only slow. It is extremely quiet at the house, especially after the loss of her pet peacock Percy during the summer of 2015. She is not licensed but encourages guests to bring their own drinks to enjoy at the house and provides glasses and either fridges or wine coolers in all rooms. One room is reserved for guests with mobility difficulties and two rooms are allocated for guests needing single occupancy. Children over 8 years of age are welcome at the house in her large ground floor suite. In winter she sometimes hosts for guests celebrating special events. Generally she avoids taking bookings to stay at the house just for one night. Whilst the house is huge - around 9000sqft, Vanessa does everything herself and therefore restricts the number of rooms booked at anyone time to a maximum of 12 guests - generally there are 6-8 guests staying during the week and a few more on a weekend. ... more   less
