2022 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
The Pestana Churchill Bay overlooks the bay of Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque Madeiran fishing city a few minutes away from Funchal. Now occupying the former Council Chamber and fish wholesale market buildings located on the seafront, the Pestana Churchill Bay was the very first hotel to open in the historic centre of Câmara de Lobos. The backdrop of the city’s white houses, green mountains and deep blue waters of the Atlantic is the ideal setting for a holiday in this charming accommodation. With 57 rooms inspired by the paintings of Winston Churchill, a restaurant offering regional flavours, with a bar and esplanade, a panoramic rooftop pool and a sauna, the Pestana Churchill Bay offers all the conditions for a relaxing holiday in a genuine locality of Madeira. Next to the reception, open to the public, there is a bar and lounge, superiorly decorated, with an outdoor terrace two steps from the water, where poncha and other traditional drinks are served, in the company of Churchill in full size bronze sculpture, hotsopt for lovers of selfies.

On arriving at the hotel it looked good. The statue of Winston Churchill looks great and the location at the edge of the bay was good. We soon discovered that although the hotel had a beautiful reception/ lounge area you could not get a tea coffee or alcohol drink there. They said it was because some work was getting done at the harbour wall but you could hardly hear the workmen outside. It didn’t stop them opening the restaurant next door and that was an outdoor restaurant. The room was fine with a harbour view from the balcony , a nice shower and easy access. Above the rooms was the hotels pier restaurant where your breakfast was served. It was a good continental breakfast with bacon, scrambled eggs. Spiced sausage and beans on offer. The pancakes were great as well .along from the restaurant was the rooftop pool and sunbed area which was excellent. Although it wasn’t a large pool, it was never busy . One downside of the holiday was the choice of food in the pier restaurant and restaurants in the area. It was fish and more fish with a couple of steaks added to the menus. All in it is a very quiet area with no entertainment laid on and only suitable for a quiet relaxing holiday. If the lounge area was open for drinks it would have made a big difference as most of the guests were dissatisfied that there was no bar in the lounge. We were told to use thee pier restaurant as a bar but that was a dining area

5th time to Madeira, 1st time staying in Camara De Lobos. I will be back again and I will stay here again. From time of arrival to time to depart very happy with the level of service. Great staff, location, hotel and restaurant. (also reviewed separately) Nice room on the 1st floor. (only floors ground and 1st) Hotel follows the soft curve of the bay (room 218) sits in the middle of the curve so ideal for viewing inland and out to see. Simple but quality room with good fixtures and fittings, nice bathroom and a comfy bed. Free safe in the room. Plenty of sockets if required. Breakfast was comprehensive. We stayed on a B+B basis but dined twice in the restaurant. Both meals excellent. Pestana have done a good job blending the hotel into, and in keeping with the location. Nicely executed with the Churchill connection. Never had an issue regards sunbeds. Pool is simple but perfectly adequate for the size of the hotel. There is a small gym down stairs, treadmill, cross trainer and bike? and few dumbbells. I liked the small and friendlyness of the hotel. Special mention for Mena on reception, Luciano at breakfast and Nuno eve meals.

A wonderful experience from start to finish. Our room was on the second floor at the end of the alleyway. Very nice balcony with the wonderful view of the small bay. The room was on the small size but comfortable and clean. Good size bathroom with a great shower. We stayed half board and have got to say the food was exceptional. Restaurant and pool area was lovely and to top it all the staff were outstanding. Many thanks in particular, to Nuno Pinto, Monika Jasito, lilandro Pestana for looking after us. All the other staff from front of house and beyond were also first class.

It has all been said in previous reviews so I am only commenting on information we think will be useful to future guests. 1) Join (free) the Pestana Guest Club – among benefits = 10% off all food & drink purchased in Pestana Hotels (10% DISCOUNT on your bill in all points of sale operated by the Pestana Group.) 2) Take half board – Currently dinner choice is from the restaurant’s a la carte menu. 3 courses, starter, main & desert and all you pay for is drinks. It is difficult to find similar quality restaurants within the immediate vicinity unless you are very fit for walking up steep hills or take a taxi. Pier One Restaurant is nice & peaceful in the evening and any external noise is unobtrusive. 3) Try & book a room on 2nd floor say 201 – 215 for additional privacy & to avoid some of the noise which is not the fault of the hotel. Rooms near Reception can be affected by the local drivers & delivery vans who toot their horns when negotiating the narrow hilly roads – they may think that by tooting it will absolve them from any liability with the inevitable crashes, so they do – frequently. Churchill Bay is on the tourist trail from Funchal and starts to get busy outside the hotel from say 8am and it can be noisy until late into the evening. Cafés & bars can get very full & it can be difficult to get a table outside with some shade which is at a premium. The current work to strengthen the sea wall is ongoing, and to our eyes very slow. It means the road outside the hotel together with all the other cafe’s & bars are affected by the lack of views due to the hoardings for the works in progress. Noise from cutters, cement mixers. small digger & stonemasons can start at 8am & continue till 6.30pm every day apart from Sunday. The stonemasons have a pile of 10k rocks which they chip at with anvils & hammers to make into a pile of 25k smaller stones, presumably for cobbles in the new pathways. All day chip chip chip. Again, not the hotel’s fault & hopefully the works will finish soon. Rooms further from reception are less affected. 4) If you have a late flight & pickup, ask reception if you can have a late checkout if possible. Normally 12 noon, you can stay in room till 2pm free, or later in the day for 25 euros. 5) From talking to various staff members, they all seem to appreciate working for Pestana Hotel Group and this is reflected in the excellent service provided to guests. The team are mainly happy, including the chefs in the open kitchen, which is reflected in the quality of the food. 6) Breakfast coffee may not suit everyone – ask for a “chinesa” from the machine. All in all, a very good 7 day stay. Niggles – refrigerator in wardrobe needs renewing, it makes the cupboard red hot. Aircon is mostly regulated by hotel and guest user control appears limited. Fine for night time but it struggles to make headway during heat of the day. There are USB charging sockets but in our room my phone said “slow charging” and the charge rate was almost zero. Wifi signal in our room balcony was about 20gbps download & 10+gbps upload, which was fine. The sea wall building works meant there was no tables & chairs outside the hotel and the large lounge bar inside was simply not being used, it was empty for all our 7 days which was a pity.

I don't normally write reviews, but churchill bay deserves a massive pat on the back. This is such a beautiful and scenic place, the hotel is clean and charming with incredibly friendly staff which actually make this place what it is. The locals around the bay are welcoming and friendly give you a sense that you are not in a tourist area. The bars and restaurants in the area are not only charming but offer a great range of local cuisine and is delicious. The Peir one restaurant at the hotel is fantastic, fresh delicious food made to order at a very high standard and the waiting staff not only make this restaurant efficient but also make you feel like your part of the family. Special shout out to Joao who was attentive, funny and knowledgeable, also Nuno Pinto who always made time to say hello even though he was always rushed off his feet. And finally Leandro who makes a fantastic sangria and works encredibly hard. Ana on reception can't do enough to help. She helped book excursions, but she would do anything to help if possible. Overall Churchills Bay is a fantastic place to stay it's small and charming and have the best team working there.

What a gem of a hotel. We stayed for a week in room 218 and couldn’t fault it. It’s worth getting a superior deluxe room as these are on the first floor (their second floor) and have a superb view of the bay. We even managed to watch a wedding from our balcony! The room was fine and you are able to ask for a top up of tea, coffee, milk and water if you need it. It’s not always automatically topped up but just ask at reception and they’ll sort it. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff on reception so don’t hesitate to talk to them. The breakfast was lovely - lots of choice of ham, cheese, cooked breakfast, pastries, yoghurt, fruit and orange juice and coffee. We also ate at the restaurant one evening and thoroughly enjoyed the food. The rooftop pool and sun beds are great and you have a wonderful view across the bay. Towels are provided in your room. We loved it and will definitely be back!

Pros - Air con was very good & guests had individual control - Staff, particularly in the restaurant were all very friendly & good. For us both Emanuel & the manager in the blue shirt were superb. - There was a Fridge in the room which although was not working initially, it was replaced quickly. - Restaurant staff happy to provide ice bucket on request - Magnificent View from bedroom & breakfast area - Room was clean - Rails provided on both sides of toilet - plenty of choice for breakfast Cons - Minimal hanging Storage as per photo attached - Room small it was a squeeze to get Average sized manual wheelchair between the end of the bed & table against wall - A Ramp to the balcony should be provided as although I could get out unaided, I needed assistance to get back into the room - On arrival Coffee tray only contained 2 sachets of coffee & 3 flavoured tea bags. There was no milk but there was a bottle of water. A note stated it was 5 euros to have this replenished. We thought that extortionate & since we weren’t aware we should have had more initially, we didn’t complain We did however notice that the day before we left further supplies including milk had been added for the next guests. - No Parasol on balcony & when requested hotel couldn’t provide one explaining the large ones by the pool wouldn’t fit & they didn’t have a normal sized one. The balcony was a sun trap in the mornings which meant I could not sit outside unless I went to the pool which is not my preference for personal reasons - It would have been beneficial to have a hand held attachment in the shower in addition to the usual shower head I would also add that the village is not wheelchair friendly. Cobbled streets & high kerbs. Very hilly & no access to public transport. Definitely not one of our better holidays

I am so pleased we found this little jem for our first visit to Madeira! The hotel is perfectly situated and overlooks Churchill Bay with its little boats bobbing around on the water and a lovely array of restaurants. It’s been lovely to come back to after days out where we can leave the bustle behind us. So pleased we decided against staying in Funchal. It’s worth a visit, especially for the cable car and a wander round the old town, but once was enough for us… Just far too busy. Buffet breakfast has something for everyone - A mix of hot and cold, pastries, fresh fruit and cereals .. Even a glass of bubbly! We had a couple of very good evening meals and lunches and every evening, we would finish our night with a drink on the terrace watching the sun go down. Our room was spotless and very comfortable. Recommend the first floor for the best views. The staff were so attentive, cheerful, and accommodating and really made our stay! Special mention to Emmanuel. Would 100% stay again.

My wife and I have just returned home after spending a week in this wonderful hotel ( room 208) in the lovely village of Camara De Lobos. We were checked in and out by Nidea who was very professional and courteous all staff were first class and appeared happy to be there. Our room was on the first floor with a wonderful view of the whole harbour which was fabulous. The room has everything that is required, comfortable bed and great shower, was kept very clean as was the whole hotel. Breakfast on the terrace was a lovely way to start the day a good selection of food items and eggs cooked to order. We had dinner twice on the terrace food was very good as was the service. The town itself we found charming and more real than Funchal there was few local characters floating about but we didn't observe anyone approaching or annoying any tourists. The bars are very busy at night with a lovely atmosphere we loved it. Food in the local restaurants and cafes was very good and reasonably priced a shout out to Deserta Pequena great food presented well and great value. There is some work going on outside the main building renewing the harbour wall which is a bit noisy but not enough to annoy us. We had a great week and will definitely be coming back.
