When we arrived for dinner the place seemed closed, but once we had found the owner inside, he quickly laid a table for us on the terrace overlooking the village square and conjured up a very tasty three course meal. Lot's of wines on the list, but no rosés as he said these are not popular in the Alentejo. But...

My husband and I know Portugal well and visited Alvito for the first time in early October. We were delighted to find this gem of a restaurant with it's 70's music and Lady Diana bar. Ernesto, the owner, could not have been more attentive to us over the two evenings we dined there. The food was excellent and the whole...

I don't normally bother slagging off average places, but this experience was so bad that a warning is necessary for unsuspecting suckers like us. It was 1pm as we drove through Alvito. We were needed lunch. We have been on a 2 week trip to Portugal and the food at this place was quite simply the worst meal we had...

The owner looks like a character from a low budget moovie, the decor a mix of european retro not a Portuguese thing, the food... well near by there's a cafe where everything ia.much.better near the fure corp. The swimming pool is.public and 200mts from it. The owner is arrogantly stupid, mistreated my kids, if possible stay at the castle much,...

We were staying at the nearby poussada but walked round the town looking for something light such as a salad for lunch. The owner welcomed us in as the only customers and handed us a menu. I explained as a coeliac I couldn't eat gluten and he just shrugged his shoulders, and said unless we ordered from the mains section...

We had read the tripadvisor reviews and knew there was something not quite right about Avaranda, but the menu looked good, there weren't too many alternatives in October and it looked good inside. So in we ventured... Our host was busy on the phone as we arrived: clearly the conversation was more important than us, his only diners that evening,...

Depressing meal which we had been looking forward to. We saw the resto at lunch and decided to return for dinner after going to a nearby town. The owner hesitated when I asked if we could have a table as if I was the lucky one not him! There were only us and another couple all evening. This cold welcome...

I was on road trip with my girlfriend around Alentejo and ended up in Alvito with no plans. Asked around where we could stay and was informed about the Varanda, the chateaux and some smaller inns in people's houses. Arriving to the front door of the varanda I was dazzed with a huge outdoor board stating that this hotel was...

I stayed here with a cycling buddy at a quiet time of year. Having called ahead, but then arrived about an hour earlier than planned due to making good time (hard to plan correctly on a cycling trip) the owner was visibly annoyed at having customers to deal with when having a nap was preferable The style was very frilly...
