To reach Loutro you need to get to the small port of Hora Sfakia, in the southern part of the island, the road is full of very tight bends.
The boat we took cost only €10 return (there is also the possibility of stopping as an intermediate stop at Sweet water beach). Loutro Bay is a wonderful location!
The blue and white buildings form the background (only made up of hotels and restaurants) and in the foreground the wonderful sea... crystal and turquoise colored water, never seen so beautiful!
I recommend not stopping on the front beaches because they are full of people crowded together (without a complete view of the place), but to go to the side location on the rocks to the left of the bay. It's called Kastela, it has sunbeds and a bar and seat service.
Standard “plastic” sunbeds cost €20, sunbeds with mattress €30 and huts €40, for the whole day.
But for so little it's really worth it! From up here the view is breathtaking, with a wide view over the entire bay and the water which in that area between the rocks is truly TRANSPARENT!
A truly relaxing day, the hut (which we took) was very comfortable, seen from above, we looked like VIPs.

The drive from Chania through the mountains to the ferry port was a bit arduous with sharp bends on cliff edges, but the surface of the road is new so if you take your time it’s fine.
We caught the 2:30pm ferry over to Loutro which takes approx 20 min - tickets 7.5O euro each adult one way with tickets available to the kiosk - an enjoyable short boat trip with lovely views. Can sit top deck in the shade.
Loutro is a very small village with a couple of gift shops, small boutique type hotels and restaurants on the waters edge. All the beaches are pebbled with beach loungers for hire.
Visiting in June seemed the perfect time as although it was busy, we were able to find available loungers and enjoy the view without swarms of tourists. The water is crystal clear and beautiful ! A little bit of paradise on earth at the right time of year !

Great boat trip from Hora Sfakia to the pretty village of Loutro. It was a very hot day (35 degrees) so walking around the island was hard but we had a great lunch…there’s plenty of places to chose from. Check the boat timings for the return and if it’s too long a gap, suggest buying a one way ticket on Seaways or another of the ships and then get a private taxi boat for your return when you want. There really isnt that much in the price differences. We payed €7.50 pp each way but you can get them cheaper….go further down the harbour and they were around €5 each way.

Loutro deserves it. It's a gem of the island. If you have some days available I consider it one of the destinations after Balos and Elafonisi. It can be easily reached by boat which takes a 20-minute ferry ride all day, docking at the port of Hora Facsion where you can directly purchase tickets (7.50 euros each way) for Lutro. There are also proven taxis.
Once you arrive in the inlet the water takes on wonderful colours; the place is served by taverns and shops, there are beaches with umbrellas and sunbeds, very comfortable especially on the side opposite the marina (non-existent square meters let's call it the boat landing). The sun does not set on the sea but you can spend hours relaxing and swimming in clear waters.
The use of shoes is recommended.
Low prices. A large straw umbrella and two maxi-size wooden sunbeds, total 12 euros.
Just like in Italy! 🤦🏻♀️

Take the boat to hora Sfakion going down to the end of the harbour, crossing cheaper on smaller boats than ferry.
Very pleasant crossing and arrival at loutro accessible only by boat or hiking trail. Small beaches, restaurants, souvenir shops., small village on the heights.

After catching the ferry across from chora sfakion we spent an amazing afternoon on the beach in the restaurant and generally all around.
It was a perfect place to go very quiet but peaceful certainly worth going if you fancy a romantic meal or just somewhere different for a few hours.
We will definitely return on our next trip worth a visit.

We wanted a one night stay here from Chania. Great daytime drive to the nearest port at Sfakia which was 75 minutes. Stopped half way to visit a fantastic winery. Then we arrived at port....do not do first ferry office go farther down by .3 km to one at dock. Half price. $10u vs $20u....25 min boat ride to bay. Checked in and spent rest of afternoon floating in fantastic water. Hotel apartment was $60e a night now dinner. Overall a gret 48 visit to be near water in a small spot with drink and food. Reminds of a mini almafi coast visit

When you buy the excursion they don't explain to you that you have to run to be able to get one of the few sunbeds that are still free when you come to the bay, that if you come early. If not you will have to sit at a restaurant the whole day because there is no free space for you to lay your towel on that stony beach.
The entire space is occupied by sunbeds !

Room Tip: Take shoes or flip flops you can swim with, it's a stony beach. No sand at all.

We hiked from Chora Skafion to Loutro along the coast despite the heatwave. The village itself is pretty but it is only for tourists, there is nothing authentic. While for the last two weeks we have been giving back confidence, this is the first time I felt like I was being defrauded. For the return by boat, all the companies have signs showing the same price, except the company ANENDIK, the last one of the wharf which at one meter from the others takes advantage of the confusion to charge double! This looks like a scam because the price is not displayed.
After that, I lost confidence and systematically controlled everything.

Waste of time, money, effort. I can’t believe I felt in this tourist trap.
I’ve been visiting Crete for decades, the tourist trap I found here is beyond any limits.
Unfriendly people looking only in your wallet. Expensive tickets for the boats, only to come to a beach that everyone is stepping ON you to move.
Worst place to visit in a such beautiful island as Crete.
I hope I made clear that you should never come and visit this place. Never.
