This is charming hotel in what was an ancient castle, situated on a hilltop with stunning views. We flew in to Peruga (more about that later) and our minibus was waiting for us (transfers included in our deal) and within half an hour we were at the hotel. Our rooms weren't quite ready when we arrived so we sat and...

We may just be unlucky but we have just had 5 days at this lovely hotel, beautiful views, terrific staff but the food served at dinners was simply not up to scratch. Cold soup ( twice), pasta dishes served cold (twice) veg served cold, wrong dishes served, pork wrapped in UNCOOKED pastry, (true!!!) desserts that looked as if made by...

We just returned from this castle turned into a hotel/spa. The beautiful view from the breakfast and dinner area was key to the stay. The staff there headed up by Maitre d', Luigi really made our stay, along with waitstaff, Claudio and Rosa! The food was what Italy does best, delicious and presented beautifully. Giovanni, the head chef deserves much...

We spent the week before Easter in this beautiful part of the country. The hotel itself is an old castle and we were lucky enough to be given the bedroom in the tower. There were windows on all four sides giving sweeping views across the fabulous olive tree strewn hillsides. The beamed ceiling was magical and each morning we woke...

Perched high on a hill the Relais Il Canalicchio is an impressive sight. When you arrive at the hotel you will not be disappointed by what you find. The quaint cobbled paths and beautiful stone buildings await. Once inside, the character continues and the rooms are very generously sized. We travelled with our son who is 10. We expected him...

Heading home after a most enjoyable week of peace and tranquility. As it is the start of the season, the hotel was far from full. But even as more guests arrived, it was still calm and quiet. The staff cannot be faulted, whether in reception, bar, restaurant or spa. Totally charming, helpful and friendly. The trip to the local vineyard...

This castle has a magical feel to it and has been very tastefully decorated. Both from the outside and the inside, it is beautiful and seen from afar, breath-taking. The reception staff are excellent, especially the new lady from Sicily who was very helpful and always smiling when we saw her. The food was really good with plenty of choice...

We travelled on a 6.30 am flight with Fleetway Travel from Gatwick to the main Rome airport and arrived on time!! Sadly the hotel shuttle bus didn't arrive until lunchtime due to storm and there are more exciting places to spend a damp morning in Rome than the airport. Arrived too late for lunch after a two hour journey to...

We stayed in early September but have only just got round to reviewing. We had an excellent 10 days holiday in this sensitively restored abbey. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and all speak English, but if you wish to attempt To order your meals in Italian then Luigi in particular will help you with your pronunciation. Having...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Relais Il Canalicchio stands like a small gem inset into the summit of a hill. The picturesque town built around the Castello di Poggio, which dates to the 10th-11th centuries, dominates the town with its imposing tower and a splendid little church close to the vineyards and olive groves at the centre of the lush Umbrian countryside. The luxury Relais has almost completely remodeled and enclosed the town of Canalicchio, an intact and resplendent oasis of peace, where only the twittering of birds interrupts the relaxing stillness. Inside, the historic and rural origins of the place are obvious; it still has its apparent castle-like structure and boasts an enormous and exquisite millstone, the old press and some lovely arches, evoking the enchanting atmosphere and charm of times gone by. ... more   less
