Detailed Reviews

We stayed at the Agriturismo Karma whilst walking the Via Francigena, on which it is situated. You have to ring up the owners, Carla and Maolo, for the code to a padlock. From the gate you then climb up some grassy stairs and terraces to reach the house, which is set on a steeply terraced hillside with fantastic views down to the sea - the bay by La Spezia and Isola Palmaria are clearly visible.
Carla greeted us with cold water to drink before showing us our rooms, which were on the floor above. The rooms were well equipped but fairly basic; both had anti mosquito coils to plug in, neither had air conditioning, but there were effective ceiling fans, and because of the altitude, there was a good breeze.
We were made extremely welcome, and Carla cooked us a generous evening meal, which was accompanied by Maolo's home made wine (delicious). For a starter we had warm brown and white breads with hams and salami, tiny fresh figs and slices of melon. This was followed by a thick vegetable soup, then sliced steak with grilled aubergine. Conversation was pleasant and the views beautiful.
Breakfast was equally good, with natural yoghurt and honey, home made cake, hams, cheese, bread and fruits. Our son had to catch an early train, and was provided with a huge goody-bag of food for the journey.
