Detailed Reviews
Beautiful and charming place, surrounded by the amazing view of the Tuscany hills everywhere you look. Rooms are spacious, and old, but with the charm preserved and well cleaned. The restaurant is lovely for evening time and all staff are wonderful, happy and constantly trying to provide the best service possible. We’ve had a great stay and warmly recommend Villa di Grassina.

Absolutely fabulous location! Authentic rustic Tuscan feel and very relaxing. Valentina and her staff made you feel welcome from the start, giving a homely feel with a laid back atmoshere. With a swimming pool and tennis court, there is plenty to keep the kids occupied. We also enjoyed the treks in the hills behind the villa. We were sad to leave at the end of the holiday.

The Place to stay at in Tuscany, when you are looking for a reasonably priced, charming, calm place with friendly staff. It's ideal for singles, couples, families, friends, elderly or young travelers, everyone - except for those looking for busy nightlife. It's the place to relax, "recharge the batteries", enjoy nature, simple but satisfying conditions. After a day or two Villa Grassina makes you feel as if you were in your own holiday house in the countryside. No luxury, it's what it offers: agriturismo.
There is a restaurant in the villa, which offers 5-6 delicious local dishes, but not every day. There is "bun service", you need to sign up the previous day at the reception (both for lunch, dinner and programmes), and you can pick up fresh rolls, buns, croissant in the morning there. Other than that, there is shopping possibilities both in Pelago and in Pontassieve.
The apartments are clean, neat and equipped with kitchen utensils, towels, bed sheets, however, you need to take kitchen towels, soap, sponge with you (if you stay for a longer time, there is sufficient possibility to wash your clothes too.) The villa offers a round tour at the property, telling you about the interesting history of the villa, combined with olive oil and wine tasting, which are local products. Don't miss it, it's great! The olive oil the villa produces is the best extra virgin one we have ever had! Also a perfect gift you can buy at the reception along with other local goodies (like wine, chestnut sweets, honey and beauty products made of olive).
Swimming pool is nice, big and clean, there is also a jacuzzi. Children have plenty of safe place to play and run around at, the villa's area is full of charming spots to relax at with some coffee (they make good one at the reception) or wine, enjoying the hilly, Tuscan landscape and a view to Pelago village in the valley.
There are nice restaurants both in Pelago and in Pontassieve, they offer a few at the villa (don't miss the one in Pontassieve that serves great fish dishes!). Keep in mind that Italians are serious about their mid-day siesta, restaurants won't be open between 3-7 pm. When you wake up late and have a late breakfast, maybe visit a town, then you are about to have lunch at around 3, but everything is closed, then either you make do with a slice of pizza (not after 3 days, I'm telling you...), you cook for yourself in the apartment, or adjust yourself to Italian dining habits. We love Italian food, but we were unhappy to discover that nearly all restaurants offer tipical tourist menus, like pizza, pasta, salad, very little variety of meat, basically the same menu everywhere, however, we are sure Italian kitchen is far more than that, and one can get really tired of these dishes after a few days. Credits here for the villa, they offer a variety of home-made style Tuscan food (keep that up, guys, it's a very good idea!).
If you want to visit Florence, leave the car in Pontassieve and take the train, it's a 20-min. trip, cheap, and no trouble with parking, which is not easy in Florence or in any other cities. Pelago is a good starting point to visit towns within a 100-km circle, such as Florence, Sienna, Pisa, Lucca, Cortona (our personal favourite). When planning a trip to one of these towns, keep in mind that either you take (and pay for) the highway, which is ugly, fast and the shortest solution to get from A to B, or you take the small roads indicated on the map, which are beautiful, but really long and slow, also narrow and curvy. There is no alternative!
I could go on and on praising Villa Grassina, but I only finish with expressing my hope that I will also become one of the many travelers who regularly return there through the years. Thank you, Villa Grassina owners and staff, keep this good job and the passion up!

A lovely 5 days spent in October at the Villa Grassina. Thank you Suzanne and Valentina for a warm welcome and friendly, helpful advice. We stayed here with our 2 teenage sons, who very much appreciated the tennis courts, pool and ping pong. As it was quiet at this time, they had the activities to themselves. The villa is placed high on the hillside, and provides stunning views of the Tuscan countryside and surrounding villages. It was very peaceful at the time we stayed, the perfect away from it all break! The site is surrounded by olive trees and woodland, and made up of a main villa, a chapel and two farmhouses, decorated in local Tuscan style. Our apartment was rustic, clean and comfortable but not luxurious, which was perfect for a family stay, and very reasonably priced. There is a restaurant on site which is open a few days a week and has very friendly service. We ate there on the day we arrived and enjoyed the pizza evening theme. Other menus are available on different days. We also made use of the breakfast service; order bread for breakfast the night before, and collect it fresh at the reception the following morning for breakfast at your apartment.
Produce from the farm is sold at the reception including olive oil and honey. The olive harvest was under-way during the week we were there. Preserves and local wine are also on sale. Suzanne offered to give us an olive oil tasting session with a tour of the cellars. Unfortunately we did not have time, but we will keep this for our next visit. There is also a bar area and wifi zone next to the reception (if you really can’t manage without it for a few days – my teenagers appreciated this aspect as well).
We split our time between lazy mornings at the villa enjoying the peace and tranquillity, and visiting the nearby towns. You do need a car if you are staying here. However, once you are equipped with wheels, Villa Grassina is ideally placed for visiting Florence, either by car (approx. 25 mins) or train, from the nearby railway station approx 15 mins away. Train is quite a good option as parking in Florence is difficult. (Suzanne and Valentine can help with booking so that you avoid the long queues at the main museums as well). Villa Grassina is also well situated for day trips to nearby towns such as Fiesole, St Gimignano, Monteriggione and the Chianti region.
In short at Villa Grassina you will find: Friendly hospitality, Tuscan charm, lovely views and a perfect base from which to visit the region.

We were a group of 25 persons celebrating a wedding and we stayed for 5 days in this beautiful place. The villa is old, but amazingly redecorated. It is kept in the old style. The food and service was amazing. The staff did their utmost to make our wedding and stay unforgettable! Highly recommendable.

Villa grassina is not a hotel bur a great self catering facility in tuscany. The availability is good. About hour drive from Pisa airport. Car hire is essential. Accommodation is basic but ample for what you need. Florence about 15 mins train away. Rome about hour train away. Connections good. Supermarket 10 min drive away. Meals on certain nights. Food you can have as little or as much as you want. Hospitality is outstanding. Nothing is too much trouble. good sized pool. Lovely local produce available.small children's play area on site. Lots of different sized apartments for different sized families or access needs. Noisy by pool, but to be expected. Can find areas easily to be quiet and relax. This is a place you never want to leave. Highly recommended. Accommodation priced fairly.

I booked Villa Grassina last minute and I had no idea how beautiful it was until we arrived. My husband and I got a one bedroom apartment and though the kitchen/sitting area was small it was efficiently outfitted. Our room had an upstairs loft and the bed was very comfortable - probably the best sleep we've had in months. The staff were wonderful - we got to know Suzanna most and she was very helpful in suggestions for sightseeing and in setting up the rest of our vacation. And the olive oil and honey the farm produces - so good! We had dinner in the restaurant on the Saturday that we arrived and it was very good and a nice chance to meet some of the other guests staying at the Villa. Can't say enough good things about it - Absolutely fabulous value for $. Beautiful setting, great people. Make sure to take the tour (Thurs aft usually) which includes some wine tasting and Tuscan style appetizers. As well, get details on local business and museum hours when you arrive so you can plan your sightseeing, shopping and dining out.

We spent a week there with family (two young kids, age of 3 and 5) in May. The apartman was clean and spacous and we also had a spectacular view. The children enjoyed the playground and its surrounding. Staff were really nice, food was great and there were so many great and charming villages very close to this villa.

Villa Grassina is an historic compound originally the property of the Buondelmonti family nearly a thousand years old. The property has been lovingly turned into an elegant agritourismo where the rooms have their own kitchen facilities but there is also a restaurant which serves dinners on Fridays and Saturdays only.
The Villa has several wings, including a self contained casale with its own apartments, as well as the main building with two or three floors of apartments. It has a lovely (cold!) pool, tennis court, huge trampoliine and play structure for the kids, laundry facilities (do it yourself), picnic tables outside each room with umbrella for dining al fresco. Daily fresh bread delivery service is available for your stay as are optional tours to nearby atttractions, farms, mountain bikes, and cooking lessons. Internet station is free and readily available.
She also offers weekly tours of the compounds oil pressing rooms down below.
We stayed for a week. The Villa is on top of a steep hill (paved road all the way to the Villa) and the views are stunning, sweeping hills of olive trees surround it.
Two big dogs live there, but they are old and harmless.
The entrance to the road is on via Vecchio Ponte so it takes a confident driver and a good head of steam to make it up the first couple of turns, but the rest of the way up is easy to drive.
There are wild boar and deer in the area, bats at night, and stars.
You are a 20 minute commuter train ride from Florence (from the neighbouring town of Pontassieve) so it's worth staying here to avoid the hustle and bustle of tourist-laden Florence.
The small town of Pelago has a Coop supermarket, a gelateria, coffee bar, and some ATMs, as well as a highly regarded restaurant (Italy's version of the Michelin guide) called Scioa. We had a memorable and delicious meal there. They are a favourite of the hotel.
The hotel is also linked to family owned leather/purse manufacturing workshop in Pelago which sells as wholesale prices from the workshop. Their wares are sold in Florence for a lot more. You can visit the workshop and shop (he prefers cash) at your heart's content. The best part about the hotel is it's a wonderful place for families. Lots of kids who get to know each other, it's safe, you can let them roam the property and play for hours on the trampoline, or impromptu soccer games.
They have a coffee bar where you can get drinks and alcoholic beverages as well as buy their own wines, olvie oils and other products from the family's cellars.
Friday night is pizza night al fresco with the rest of the guests (you sign up for your seating time in advance) and Saturday is a fancy dinner.
The place is a favourite of Dutch and Irish travellers as well as Germans and English.
Ample parking. Change of towels and linens as often as you require.
Bring your own soap for the bathroom!
The windows have no screens but there are no bugs, its breezy at night due to its hilltop location, and the matrimonial bed in room 2B is comfy and on a raised balcony above the main sitting area/kitchen.
TV is tiny but adequate, and who wants to spend much time indoors when you are in Tuscany anyway?
Highly recommend it.

We were so impressed when came to the restaurant for a family meal on holiday. The setting is absolutely stunning! The staff were so attentive and some spoke English well. The food was phenomenal! There is a different menu each night and you need to book in advance as it is very popular! We discovered this when we tried to book a table for a second time on our holiday. Luckily we got in again and we are very much looking forward to returning!
