The building itself is absolutely worth staying in this hotel. The rooms aren't too fancy, but the Flair and Charme of the building is like no other. Only topped by the great couple who owns and runs the hotel. We were the only guests at the time (thanks to Covid, incase someone will be reading this in a few years) and the owners of the hotel were extremely kind, helped us with finding a nice restaurant for dinner and arranged a great tour in the medival theatre next door. Definitely want to return.
Our original hotel was overbooked so we were transferred to Hotel Goldenes Kreuz. What a treat for us... a very old 700 year family run hotel right in Grein. Elizabeth on reception was so friendly and helpful. Our room was cute & cozy, great TV/bathroom/storage. We loved the stone steps, antique furniture, maps & lithographs to learn more about Grein. Fantastic breakfast - bread/rolls were delicious as was the fruit salad! Heaps of other options to choose from. The outdoor terrace was lovely overlooking ivy covered walls. Not many hotels have fridges full of beer, soft drinks and wine with an honesty system - just write name, room no, qty, drinks taken. Tallied at check out. Walking distance to so many restaurants. We loved our 1 night stay there.
We have stayed in hundreds of hotels big and small over the last few years. We stayed here in 2017 and had a wonderful stay. We returned here this year because of that great experience. Unfortunately our stay here this year was ruined by the dark haired lady at reception. At check in we asked for 2 extra towels, a room fan due to the excessive heat (this hotel has no air conditioning), and if we could pay our bill. To each question the reception lady nastily said very harshly, “NO”. Note that we were given a room fan 2 years ago and have a picture on our journal from then to prove it. She also told us not to open our room window and to keep the blinds closed and then “your room will cool down nicely” even though the room faces southwest and got the sun all day. Suffice it to say the room was extremely uncomfortable to the point that merely lying on the bed caused the pillow to become soaking wet under your head. The reception lady ruined our stay by leaving a very poor taste in our mouth about this hotel. No matter how nice the hotel may be, nobody should be treated the way we were treated. I know if we had been met by Thomas, the owner, our experience would have been totally different. Bottom line- the dark haired lady should not be working in reception. Avoid her if you can. If you encounter her, ask to speak to Thomas. …
The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were charming, the hotel dating back centuries. Great breakfast before heading out on our bikes. Helpful hints on where to go in town. Recommend this facility highly
We arrived wet and cold after a very rainy day on our bikes. Elizabeth (the owner's sister) kindly showed us the bike garage and drying room for our wet clothes, all positioned around the huge old courtyard of the hotel. This place has character - and history! We had a large room with a huge bed, wardrobe etc, and shower. Grein is a lovely small town with interesting buildings and the hotel is directly on the pretty town square. Breakfast was plentiful and varied, with great boiled eggs!
