After a marvellous month at the Pacific coast we had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Posada Nena in San Jose (Costa Rica). The boss and staff are very friendly and helpful and we felt very comfortable, almost like at home, also with our pretty room, each designed differently... Breakfast is always prepared with love. A wonderful dinner is prepared on request... Thank you Posada Nena for everything, we will come again!
Santa Ana is close to the airport - good for the start of end of your trip. There are lots of restaurants close by in any price category with some really delicious food - see Volker's restaurant list. The owners are authors of travel guides - we used one extensively in Panama - so they're very knowledgeable. They can also book day trips or long tours. We took the 1/2 day tour to the Irazu volcano and enjoyed it very much. The early start at 6 a.m. is necessary to see the crater before the clouds move in. Seeing the changing landscape and all the farms on the way up to 3432 m above sea level was interesting. The cathedral on the way back is a place Costa Ricans make pilgrimages to. The people at the hotel were very patient in speaking Spanish with us. German is the primary language here, but I'm pretty sure they're competent in English. We were in the special situation of having our flight home canceled in the middle of the coronavirus crisis, so we appreciated the bar/dining area where people gather for a beer and a chat. We got a lot of the best information from other travelers, not from governments or airlines. Many thanks to all the great staff who even gave us masks and disinfectant for the flight back home. Great people!…
Hotel Posada Nena was my favorite place to stay. I loved the cozy local feel and the staff was great. Now they have crowded it with as many beds and guests as they can. The wonderful staff appears tired and overworked (they are still very kind). If you are not German the new person who makes reservations probably won’t have a room for you unless it is the off season and a slow period. It is unfortunate that Posada Nena lost some of its wonder personal service and character with their “upgrades”. One useful upgrade would have been to fix the air conditioner. Sometimes it can be loud. If you prefer to spend your time in Costa Rica with people from Germany this is a great choice.
We started our trip to Costa Rica and Panama at Posada Nena and it was a perfect first night for us. The room was very comfortable and spacious, staff was really nice and helpful and we had a very good and tasty breakfast the next morning. There is a Sunday market nearby, so we enjoyed the very nice atmosphere of the neighborhood. The owner Volker has a travel agency and we booked most accommodations and our car with him. The car waited for us at Posada Nena, so we had an easy start in our trip. Everything was very well organized and we had a great time and went to awesome places. He is eager to find out what you like and makes very good suggestions accordingly. We highly recommend Posada Nena and Volkers alautentico tours.
We spend 2 nights after our arrival in Costa Rica and have to say it was a little cozy hotel with friendly staff. Although the hotel felt much smaller then shown and it’s a bit noisy (dogs barking all night) plus we could not lock our door which felt unsafe.
