Shuttle picked us from the train station. Staff were welcoming and multilingual. Rooms were rather old but well kept and cozy. Food at dinner and breakfast was ok (slightly disappointing compared to the high quality food in Tokyo). But those are small details. The main attraction are the mixed-gender natural hot spring baths and they do not disappoint. There are...

Very easy to get to on the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo, this is among the most beautiful of the Onsen resorts in Japan. A shuttle is available to take you from the train station to the hot spring resort (which also does day passes). Make sure to visit the black bear rehab and rescue onsite where, where there is an...

We visited Takaragawa for 2 whole days of serenity towards the end of our 3 week honeymoon adventure across Japan. The shuttle picked us and another couple up from the train station. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and had all the rules and etiquette explained to us. We stayed in one of the rooms in the main building with...

We arrived at Osenkaku on a rainy spring day and the mist floating around the green landscape which surrounds the ryokan was beautiful. Our room was clean and tidy however it is in much need of a makeover. The tatami mats are old and worn. The walls and furniture were tired looking and stained. Our futons were thin and it...

Took the local bus from the train station to the bus stop near the hotel - snow capped mountains, frozen river, snow covered fields - the perfect setting for a night at the onsen! Met by the staff at the bus stop. Checking in was easy. I was given a 'dress' to cover myself for the onsen (they are all...

I struggled over whether to give this a 3 or a 4. My wife would undoubtedly have voted for a 2, but she is not a Japan-ophile like I am and found the style of lodging and idea of mixed gender naked bathing in public not to her liking... And that is the main point I would make really. This...

This is a GREAT place to stay! It was pure magic to relax in the onsen nestled in the snowy hills and snow fell softly down around us. Wow! The whole property is very relaxing. We stayed in a room in the annex building and we were right above the river!! So peaceful to listen to the sounds of the...

Staying here was a mind-broadening experience. This is why: -The view was super magical. Like straight out of a fairy tale magical. But then again it was my 1st time seeing snow so i might be biased. - The onsen is a short outdoor walking distance (like a 3 min++ walk) from the hotel. It may seem short but it...

I must recommend this hotel to any big onsen fans due to the scenery of the outdoor onsens. It is nothing comparable in my onsen experience. Bridges across the three big outdoor onsens of mixed gender. However, the dress code is not appropriate. Female onsen users have skirts to wear but male onsen users rely on the usual towel to...

I was so excited to stay here and imagined the beauty and tranquility my friends and I would experience. After digging in reviews, I found that not only do they serve BEAR MEET, but they keep them in cages while they await their slaughter. Sorry, can't imagine how awful.
