Not a lot of snow when we got here. But there is now a metre of snow over night and still snowing. Great spectacle watching the local men drag two trees through the streets yesterday for the fire festival on this weekend. Tokiwaya Ryokan is very comfortable and on the main village street. Just about every room booked by westerners....

I am actually conflicted in reviewing this Hotel because I don't want to criticize it in any way but...! Let me start in saying that the hospitality and service at this hotel is nothing short of exceptional (special mention to Kyoko) and the location is perfect! If you want to experience an authentic Japanese hotel go no further. Breakfast alone...

We stayed in this Ryokan, with its nearly 400 years history one night. Very friendly staff, exceptionally well located, a pleasant stay. You will be in the heart of this picturesque hot springs village.

Very hospitable, traditional accommodation, friendly, everything in order. We enjoyed the breakfasts and the clockwork timing of everything. It's a little old but has that special charm of a ryokan. Be prepared for minimalist accommodation, bedding that appears whilst you're out for dinner and disappears when at breakfast. The hotel also has its own onsen, though the town itself has...

We stayed in this hotel for 5 days. I think it has the perfect location being in between convenience stores, restaurants, bars and souvenir shops. Everything is, literally, within 200 meters to include the walkalator that brings you up to the mountain (Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort) for skiing or snow boarding. It houses onsens wherein emperors used to bathe. Its...

This is a nearly 400 years old institution. Given its long standing historical existence, staying here is taking part in a piece of history and though slightly dated, the ryokan is well preserved and in fine condition. Arriving at the chuo bus station, it is advisable to head across the road towards the information centre for direction to the ryokan....

We recently spent 11 days at the Tokiwaya Ryokan and can't recommend it highly enough for a truly authentic Japanese experience in the snow. The building itself is beautiful with its long history apparent in every detail. The service was outstanding-Nauru and his wife and, Keioko (apologies for spelling!) went out of their way to ensure our holiday was truly...

Great location for snow access. Friendly and helpful staff - for example, without any request from us, they turned up to meet us at the bus station in Nozawaonsen and drive us back to the ryokan. Hire your gear from a place on the snow that will allow you to store it overnight, rather than lugging it back down after...

The onsen is great. Locking up snow gear is a pain. Breakfast was good both western and Japanese. Rooms were ok but as expected in Nozawa very dated. Very pricey for what it is. Wifi in our room was not good

We spent a week at the wonderful Tokiwaya Ryokan and loved every minute. As you can read on its website, it is an historic and famous ryokan because of its onsen. Tours of the village stop in front of the ryokan as it is so well known. We chose it to experience a traditional Japanese inn. We booked 2 rooms...
