We stayed in this hotel for 5 days. I think it has the perfect location being in between convenience stores, restaurants, bars and souvenir shops. Everything is, literally, within 200 meters to include the walkalator that brings you up to the mountain (Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort) for skiing or snow boarding. It houses onsens wherein emperors used to bathe. Its... More

This is a nearly 400 years old institution. Given its long standing historical existence, staying here is taking part in a piece of history and though slightly dated, the ryokan is well preserved and in fine condition. Arriving at the chuo bus station, it is advisable to head across the road towards the information centre for direction to the ryokan.... More

We recently spent 11 days at the Tokiwaya Ryokan and can't recommend it highly enough for a truly authentic Japanese experience in the snow. The building itself is beautiful with its long history apparent in every detail. The service was outstanding-Nauru and his wife and, Keioko (apologies for spelling!) went out of their way to ensure our holiday was truly... More

Great location for snow access. Friendly and helpful staff - for example, without any request from us, they turned up to meet us at the bus station in Nozawaonsen and drive us back to the ryokan. Hire your gear from a place on the snow that will allow you to store it overnight, rather than lugging it back down after... More

The onsen is great. Locking up snow gear is a pain. Breakfast was good both western and Japanese. Rooms were ok but as expected in Nozawa very dated. Very pricey for what it is. Wifi in our room was not good

We spent a week at the wonderful Tokiwaya Ryokan and loved every minute. As you can read on its website, it is an historic and famous ryokan because of its onsen. Tours of the village stop in front of the ryokan as it is so well known. We chose it to experience a traditional Japanese inn. We booked 2 rooms... More

We wanted to experience a traditional Japanese living and we found that Nozawa-onsen. The hotel was lovely. We had a large traditional room with a tatami floors, a living room, separate bedroom and balcony areas and lovely traditional tub bath with hot spring water. Hotel room includes traditional dinner (10 courses) and traditional breakfast. You can easily skip lunch or... More

This was our first trip to Nozawa Onsen and most accommodation had already been booked out for this busiest time of the year. We were offered a room at the Tokiwaya and as there were initially no reviews, I was a little nervous and unsure about bringing my family here. Well.... nothing to worry about. The Ryokan is fantastic. It... More

A great place to stay in Nozawa. Centrally located. Not too far from where the bus dropped us off. Close enough to the walkway and to the local shops and restaurants. Traditional style was evident, and a willingness to be a part of the Japanese culture goes a long way. Some Japanese language would be a great help but not... More

We stayed for 3 nights on a recent ski holiday to nozawaonsen. We chose a traditional Japanese room, complete with tatami floors and futon bedding. A great choice. The ryokan is run by an older couple, and despite us having no Japanese language skills, they were great hosts. There was not a lot of English spoken, but we managed to... More
