Went for a couple of nights stay, hotel was easy to find though there was no private parking, checked in ok though a bit disappointed that we weren’t asked if we wanted a bath mat ( had to ask specifically for one, when IMO should really be as standard as the bath was a death trap) the room was clean and comfortable, though going back to the bath/shower, you need to be lightening fast to take advantage of the 30 seconds worth of water you get before it’s reduced to a trickle.
That and the fact that you have to take a shower whilst bent double holding the selector up meant that we called downstairs and though they did come up to the room, felt like we were basically fobbed off as in “ this is the way it works, get on with it”
Dinner and drinks were nice and reasonably priced, though for some reason we were seated in the bar which after a while became quite deafening and ruined the rest of our meal.
Breakfast was nice, seated straight away, a good selection of cereals and fruit and was pleased to see staff adhering to current guidelines.
I’m giving it a four, but save for the fact that it’s so close to the beach it’d be a 3

Visited this hotel in early February 2020 and was very pleased. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the greatest when we were in Downings (weekend of Storm Ciara) however we made the most of it.
The check in was very pleasant and efficient and we took our case to the room, which was on first floor, and was clean tidy, and had tea/coffee facilities. Hairdryer, shower cap and soap/shower gel supplied.
There are two bars and a restaurant and they were keenly priced (Guinness and vodka/cola lite was around 11euro). We ate in the restaurant and had a lovely meal - restaurant was very quiet, and I think I'd actually choose to eat in the bar the next time (bigger menu in the bar, and a bit more atmosphere).
Downings would be a good base to visit the local area and I wouldn't hesitate to stay in this hotel again. Staff all very friendly and welcoming.

We have stayed at the Downings bay hotel before, and dined here many times with no issues. However I was that disappointed with the cleanliness of the rooms that I felt I needed to leave this review. When we first arrived to our room after check in I went to use the toilet to discover a rather large poo in the toilet. The poo would not flush and almost seemed stuck which would suggest it's been there for a while. This makes me think that the cleaner has either not bothered cleaning the toilet or seemed to ignore the problem which in my eyes is totally unacceptable especially given the times were in cleaning should be at its peak!!! We informed reception who apologiessd and kindly moved us into the next room and put our original room out of order. When we arrived to the new room, again the room was not very clean. Fresh bed linen and towels. However there were stains on the head board above the bed, there was something spilled on the table that had gone hard and there was crumbs all over the floor. Again the toilet was not clean not as bad as the previous room but you could see waste particles up the bowl which we had to clean. Given the current circumstances this is extremely unacceptable. A clean room is not much to ask for.
On a positive note the reception, bar and waiting staff were very friendly and the food in the bar was delicious. The cleanliness of the rooms was just a total let down for us.

I could write an essay on how badly myself and my family were treated at this hotel. Long story short...we were charged for 5 items on the bill which we did not order from the bar/restaurant and which they refused to reimburse us for. They told me that there was no way that the bar maid would make a mistake like that and that they would look at the CCTV footage to confirm this. Elaine, the "manager"lied and said they saw us receiving the items on the footage and when I asked to view the so-called footage of myself and my family receiving the items (which I am within my right to see) she laughed and said that she can't just show the general public the cctv footage even though it was supposedly of myself! Most of the reception staff were extremely rude and just seemed to be awkward at every stage of our stay there. Myself and my family will never be back here. Worst experience we have had staying in a hotel ever.

Our stay at the downjngs Bay Hotel was fantastic. Aoife was so efficient and lovely on the phone before our visit and from arrival all staff were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble. When we arrived our rooms had been upgraded and the rooms were beautiful so comfortable and bed and pillows (very important 😁) were really comfy . Had Sunday lunch in the bar and food was gorgeous . Downjngs is beautiful . Would highly recommend a visit to this hotel . We will be back 👍

I Frequently visit Downings which despite Covid has made a remarkable come back with the famously warm Irish welcome and charm truly making a come back!
A family gathering of 8 booked in with the Bay Hotel. We were running late and called in advance. Staff at desk were really helpful and reminded us we needed table to be vacated at 6pm. That was understandable and absolutely fine with us.
Starters and main wrapped up at 5.25pm. At 5.30pm we were offered dessert from the waitress. At 5.42pm the same waitress came out and abruptly told us we can’t have dessert as we were late and table was required for 6pm.
3 disappointed kids couldn’t have their ice cream and were upset. I went up and asked to speak to the manager to explain that in fact it was only 3 kids Ice creams and we would be gone for 6pm.
Another waitress marched down to me and stated ‘you can’t have dessert and another higher manager made the call’.
Shocking treatment all together and a real sour taste left for us.
Fully appreciate the challenges of hospitality industry over recent times however there is no excuse for this.
We won’t be back!

My husband and I are exhausted after our two night stay in this hotel. It was one of the noisiest hotels we've ever stayed in. There were children running around the corridors until after 1.30am and there were doors banging loudly constantly. The owners should consider changing the room doors to soft-close doors. There was also lots of noise from outside the hotel. The staff were friendly and Downings is lovely but we won't be staying in this hotel again.

Having been in lockdown all year, my family and I were excited go to the downings for a ‘stay-cation’. Overall, this place is really nice, as are the people. However, as I tried to enter this hotel to withdraw money from the ATM, I was informed by the officious receptionist that I “must wear a mask”. I promptly and politely informed her that I am, in fact, medically exempt from having to wear one to which she replied “you can buy a mask here for a euro”To me this seems blatantly ignorant, an exemption should never be dismissed Avoid this place if you want respectful treatment and decent customer service

Great one night stay at Downings Bay Hotel, was impressed by the fresh renovated decor in the rooms and large bathroom.
Location in town is perfect for walking to the beach and short dander to the Harbour Bar and Fisk for delicious fresh seafood and a creamy pint of Guinness.
In the evening, we chose to dine in the hotel bar with family as a group. Enjoying our evening as a family we ordered several rounds of drinks, served by various staff who were all very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately our experience was dampered by a rude barman who when ordering drinks, made an insulting and rude comment. I was even more shocked to find out that the barman was infact one of the owners and was told by locals that he has a reputation for being extremely rude. As a hotel guest, I cannot understand how an owner could make such a comment to a guest. Does he not value the business of paying guests?
This man needs a lesson in customer service as well as basic etiquette. It's unfortunate that our stay was pleasant until this owner upset us and as a result has left a negative imprint on our stay.

get on to downing bay and ask them if you can still use the voucher.
1/2 mile to Rosapenna GC that has two excellent courses, running thru the sandhills with challenging holes & excellent sea views. I preferred the Tom Morris. Abs need a buggy if you’re struggling with walking. Not far to Portsalon, a bit further to the excellent two courses at Ballyliffin.
