Located on the Wild Atlantic Way, for over 40 years the McGinley family have been welcoming guests to this rugged corner of North Donegal. Only 30 minutes from Fanad Head Lighthouse, one of just three Signature Discovery Points in Donegal on the Wild Atlantic Way, and also 30 minutes from the unspoilt expanse that is Glenveagh National Park and Castle. The safe and secure family-orientated location with large open grassy areas and a tennis court on-site is an ideal base for exploring all that Donegal has to offer. Adjacent to great value links golf at Rosapenna with stunning sandy beaches, watersports, horse-riding, and leisure centre locally, as well as a choice of traditional pubs, restaurants, and cafes. Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

These are an excellent choice for a trip to North Donegal. Sitting just above Downings, they are convenient for many activities. They are clean and well equipped and some have excellent views from the comfort of your armchair. Downings is close to a number of scenic drives e.g the Wild Atlantic Way, Atlantic Drive, Mulroy Drive and the Salt road. The hiking is excellent along Tramore beach, across Sheephaven bay at Ards Friary or a gentle stroll to Island Roy. There are alot of slipways for a Kayaks or try launching from Downings beach which is popular for all types of water sports. Carrigart now has an excellent baker and I enjoyed a horse riding lesson and novice friendly hike at Carrigart horse riding. Mevach dive centre kept the divers in the group coming back for more. The weather will be an uninvited companion on your stay and will dictate the itinerary. Pack for all seasons, wear layers from swim suit to rain mac, eveytime you go out, and don't forget your waterproof trousers!

We have travelled extensively and this is without doubt the best self catering accommodation we have experienced. A fantastic location with exceptional views across the landscape to the village and sea. The cottage was exceptionally well appointed and very spacious, and we even had an open fire for the cold nights. Our host, Seamus, was so helpful and provided us with terrific recommendations of what to do while in the area. We stayed for 4 nights but could have stayed much longer. A must stay if travelling to this are.

Second visit to here. Great accommodation, lovely location. We had an issue with our heating. Seamus carried out a temporary repair and immediately supplied logs, coal etc. Engineer called for the next morning. The round houses are quirky in design and so spacious. Ours had a view to die for. We will definitely return.

We have been returning to Coastguard Cottages annually since we discovered this hidden gem several years ago. The most important element of the holiday is the personal and friendly welcome from the people, especially Seamus and his team who can't do enough to make the stay as enjoyable as possible. The views are fabulous, the sunsets are spectacular and all within a short walk to the village of Downings.

Superb as always! We have been coming to The Coastguard Cottages for 25+ years and standards have been consistently maintained…… I have never been fit to say that an update was needed! Seamus is always available either on-site or at the end of the phone if there is ever a query. His team of cleaners are extremely diligent in their work, when you walk through the door, you know everything is so fresh and clean. Enjoy your stay 😎

we are just back from these great cottages and as of last year Seamus and his crew did not disappoint, these cottages are just great and the Downings area has so much to offer, you have great beach's close by with Tra na rossan being our favourite for swimming, one disappointing thing was Murder hole beach was closed to the public by the farmer whos land you have to cross to get to it, surly something has to be done about this by the local council as its one of the big attractions in this area but that aside the cottages and Downings are without doubt highly recommended.

Four of us and our dog stayed in the cottages for 3 nights in sept 2020 and we have to say that this house was the best and cleanest we have stayed in, the house was immaculate all over and our host Seamus was just great,he never stopped working and offered us loads of advice about the area, Seamus and his team maintain these cottages to a very high level. They have all you will need to relax and it had a fully equipped kitchen so no need to bring anything really. Downing’s and the surrounding area has so much to do for all ages and the beaches are just wonderful, we will come back here for sure, thank you Seamus 👍

Stayed for a week. Should have booked for 2 weeks. Accommodation is very clean. Very comfortable. Lot's of space. Everything about the house is quality. The views are simply awesome. We are very keen to return to Downings and Coastguard Cottages. Seamus is a perfect host. Downings and Donegal are a little bit of heaven. There was a really nice atmosphere around the cottages. Young families having fun. Very quiet at night. Easy walk down to the fantastic beaches in Downings. Rosapenna golf courses are 4 minutes away and are magnificent. There many not be a better 9 holes in Ireland than the back 9 on the Old Tom Morris. Golfing Paradise. Thank you Coastguard Cottages.
