My wife and I ended up staying at Sandalanka Rest. The young owner offered us a good price for the room and told us he didn't do safaris so we were happy to stay independent without the hassle of the safari guys (they do get quite pushy in Tissa). Of course there were some other very dubious guys around (friends he said) who offered safaris, but we booked ours independently at the independent jeep association at the lake (much recommended, no hassle just a jeep of your own for 4,000 LKR). Anyways, we went on a safari and when we came back we both had the feeling the owner just came out of our room (there was no reason for him to be upstairs at our door and he appeared nervous). We checked our stuff and nothing was missing, but we didn't trust his 'friendliness' anymore. The next day we went out and decided to take all our valuables with us and set a trap behind our door so we could see if someone had been in the room in our absence. Came back and sat downstairs to drink something and after 10 minutes the owner comes out of our room with my binocular (which I apparently forgot) around his neck! WHAT?! He started to make up all kinds of nonsense excuses, but we caught him redhanded! The whole debate got him really worked up and he started pushing me and things started to get aggressive and threatening. Meanwhile on of his friends (who was in on it!) came and also a group of other guys were at the gate to the road (with screwdrivers, coincidence?). Obviously a bad situation, so we want to warn everyone: DON'T STAY AT SANDALANKA REST! IT IS VERY DANGEROUS, THEY MIGHT APPEAR ALL FRIENDLY BUT THEY CANT BE TRUSTED!!!!

We were recommended this guest house by a tuk tuk driver in Ella (which is always taking a chance!) and when we looked it up it seemed ok. Wrong! The room was big and had a mossie net over one bed (none provided for the second bed despite asking twice) and it had an adjoining bathroom. We stayed here for a trip to yala (with a different company) and the location was convenient, being a very short walk from the bus station. This was without a doubt the dirtiest place we stayed in Sri Lanka. Blood on the floor, need I say more? Bathroom really dirty too. The place was also completely infested with Mosquitos which I know can happen anywhere but it just made the room seem all the more grim.
