Hadn't been to the Northey Arms for many years but booked in today for lunch with friends (venue chosen purely as equidistant from our various locations) and couldn't have chosen better. A warm welcome on arrival, comfortable and relaxed setting and wonderful food. The menu was genuinely delightful - classic yet modern - and didn't disappoint. Great service and value too. Both myself and my friends look forward to returning soon. Highly recommended.
Thank Jon M

We have stayed here for 2 nights in October for the last three years - see 2016 review. My ranking has dropped by one. Read on.

Third time lucky??? - This time we got allocated a room in the main building.

Was it better than the annexe? yes and no.

We were in room 5 - a nice room, but not as big as the annexe rooms we stayed in. I imagine that the rooms in the main building have been brought up to date with the addition of ensuites - taking away some of the space. the ensuite was pretty much the same as in the annexe rooms; a good size with walk in shower. But the ensuite light worked on a sensor - so when you were in the steamy shower it couldn't see you - Mrs L thought I was playing a Halloween trick on her!!! A minor issue though, not like the filthy dressing table chair in this room (the main reason for a lower mark).

In the main house the passing trains only produce a low rumble.

The rest was pretty much the same as our last stays - very good, convenient for Bath and reasonable value.

We have not been put off and will likely stay again.

My husband and I were treated to Sunday lunch. We were seated promptly and drink and food orders taken. We were originally seated near the kitchen but due to the foot traffic moved table. Our roast beef and lamb orders arrived and enjoying the food whilst chatting only for a large table to filled next to us with a young toddler who screamed the place down throughout and running around. We asked to be moved away to a quieter table as still plenty of empty tables. Our desserts of sticky toffee and brownies arrived which were yummy.
Service was very good and staff very friendly.
Just a few things that could be approved as we didnt feel it was a 5* restaurant as the mustard arrived in the mustard pot. Paper napkins, We had to change a chair as very stained. Our table had crumbs from breakfast

Stayed here for two nights with friends. Rooms were very nice and the bathrooms large. Plenty of hot water but the extractor fans don’t seem to work so condensation is spoiling the decor, certainly needs addressing.
Dinner on our first night was chaotic. We had been asked to come down early at it was busy, their Steak Night. We did so but it still took ages to get the meal ordered and it was over an hour arriving, only three staff. Two peoples steaks were cold and the others luke warm. Didn’t send back as we thought we wouldn’t get them replaced quickly. Tables near ours who came in after us faired no better. With dessert we were seated well over three hours for just two courses. There was obviously a shortage of staff if the meals were waiting at the servery end. The second night was much quieter and we enjoyed our meal. Still the same number of staff on though.
We had rooms in the main house so railway not a problem. Breakfast both days was freshly cooked and very nice. Only boxed serials if you didn’t want a hot breakfast so I think that could be addressed.
Pity that there are only two sofas at one end of the bar to sit and just have a drink. If occupied there are only dining tables to sit at, a few high stools but those not to our taste.
Overall our stay was pleasant and with the exception of one member of staff who needed a humour transplant the team were young and friendly. Not so sure I would have felt the same staying as a couple.
Thank susie02
The former Box Station Hotel owes its architecture to Brunel. Head Chef Chris Alderson has created a classic menu using seasonal produce. Fresh fish is delivered to from Cornwall, along with locally sourced beef. More Those staying the night will be royally spoilt as slick bedrooms sport pieces of one-off furniture and sculpture - and beds super comfortable with dazzling white linen and thick mattresses. One room has a decked balcony, all have coffee-machines, and slate stone bathrooms Less
