I’ve been a spire member with IHG for many years and never stayed in a hotel as bad as this one. I struggle to believe IHG would want this hotel in its portfolio. The walls / doors are so thin you hear the TV from either side of your room and the room above. You can hear conversations as if the folk were actually in your room. The beds must be over 10 years old and are truly horrendous. The TV is as old as the bed and the basic furnishing in the room is all needing replaced. The kettle is dangerous, the mug had a hair in it and the toiletries are beyond basic. The front reception is like a set for an 80’s movie. The lifts are not linked and the lack of atmosphere creates says all that has to be said for this hotel. One thing to highlight is the staff members I met were all fantastic and very professional. They must feel like they are pissing against the wind working here…
This is a typical chain hotel. The decor and room condition was a bit sad, clearly needing some sprucing up. We thought it may be a bit grubby (just the overall ambience of the room) BUT as it's covid days, we wiped most of the surfaces and bathroom furniture etc.with surface wipes and found it to be spotless !! Hats off to the cleaning staff. I think we may have had a room upgrade as our room was larger than most (looking at the fire escape plans), but nothing was mentioned. Thank you if it was. No fridge, but plenty of space, good air con, nice bathroom 'freebies', plenty of good towels. Asked for pillows to be changed to smaller which they did in an instance. We only had breakfast there (x3) and unfortunately we found it to be warm at best and uninspiring. To be fair we didn't complain at the time, and I am sure they may have tried to sort something. However, it shouldn't really be served up like this. It probably doesn't help with covid measures in place, being a buffet menu but dished up by the staff. Perhaps short-term they should consider ordering and waiting to tables. However, when we did ask for certain things and assistance, nothing was too much for the pleasant staff and management. The coffee from the machine was also not very pleasant which was a shame. Perhaps all the above is typical of a large chain hotel, and didn't exactly take us by surprise. What does redeem itself is that all the staff and management were trying to be as helpful as possible, and were all very friendly. They and the hotel are working under very restricted procedures and this is why we felt satisfied with our visit and didn't complain. It would be unfair during covid times to judge too harshly, and I am sure that some of the issues would not be present in normal times. Based on our contact with the staff, I am confident they would help with anything within reason. Extremely approachable. So in summary, it was ok, but extremely clean, very friendly and helpful. Reason enough to stay here and worthy of a 4* rating based on customer service. Don't be afraid to ask if you aren't happy about anything.…
I stayed here last year mid-Covid and had a pleasant experience. This year I’m sad to say was anything but. The bed was very soft and the uncovered bed cover showed it was not in overly prime condition. At dinner, the food was appalling. Newly non-meat eating was a challenge just ordering but the meal itself was barely edible, not helped by the main course literally being thrown across the table. Breakfast was also poor with no real vegetarian option, eg veggie sausage just the standard mushrooms, beans etc. I’ve stayed in many Holiday Inns over the years and I have come to expect much better.
Stayed with friends on 26th& 27th May. As base to visit canon hall farm & holmfirth, Rooms spotless, food great & the portions, wow. Staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. Great value for money, would definitely stay here again. Well done to management & all staff in these difficult times
The holiday inn Barnsley, although looking a little tired on the outside, had by far got it spot on when it comes to customer service and food. A really professional attitude towards current restrictions and guests were made to feel really welcome. Food was excellent and delivered to the room still hot. Service throughout was first class. Will definitely book again.
