Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
Dunboyne Castle Hotel & Spa offers an atmosphere that blends modern elegance with some outdated elements, according to guests. While the hotel's location is often praised for its convenience to Dublin and local attractions, opinions on value for money vary, with some reviewers pointing to high prices and extra spa charges as drawbacks. Cleanliness is generally commended, though certain areas are noted to need an update.
The service receives mixed reviews, with commendations for staff friendliness but some dissatisfaction with efficiency. Room quality is inconsistent, and while the renovated spa is a highlight, additional refurbishments are suggested.

Detailed Reviews
Myself and a friend availed of the spa weekend retreat offer of a 1 night stay, 3 course dinner, 40 min spa treatment and breakfast. Check in was seamless and we arrived at our room which was a twin room. The TV and fridge did not work. We rang reception who sent a maintenance worker to repair. He was unable to repair the tv and we asked to move room which was no problem and was done very efficiently. The room we were moved to had bigger twin size beds which I thought was unusual as I presumed all twin size beds would be standard. We went to the spa an hour before our treatments to avail of the thermal facilities. The girl showed us around the facilities and apologised for how busy it was stating she had never seen it so busy. Trying to find a space in the pool, sauna and hot tub was ner impossible. Not the most relaxing environment. When called for the treatment the therapist Alex was the saving grace of the weekend. Alex was so attentive and excellent throughout the 40 mins. At dinner time service was poor. It took very long to get the starter and that continued to mains. I do like time between meals but this wait was extremely long. We were never asked if things were ok during our meals. Also portion sizes are quite small. Overall, the cleanliness of the hotel room was very good. Staff in the dining area need upskilling for their waiting and attentiveness.

Stayed for 2 nights. Overall didn't feel as good as many other 4 star hotel stays.
The sadlier bar badly needs to be updated. The terrace lounge is lovely and was a much nicer area to seat in.
Had the chicken tikka masala off the bar menu. At best you could call it a chicken curry. Chicken tikka is marinated chicken, the chicken in the dish was not marinated and was rather dry and it was full of celery. Not sure I've ever come across that in an Indian curry.
Would also expect nicer serving plates and dishes at a 4 star.
The ivy restaurant was very nice and tasty food but seemed over priced at 134 for 3 courses with 2 pints.
The breakfast was very mediocre. Not sure why the chef has to serve in the room, why not just plate up from the kitchen. Would rather queue to be served a more substantial continental range rather than the plate of fruit and pastries you get. No potato option or beans for breakfast was disappointing. The poached and fried eggs as ordered specially from the kitchen were both over cooked with no runny yolks.
The spa was nice, we had the hydrotherapy pool to ourselves prior to treatment, not sure why the outside jacuzzi has to be closed, have seen other spas open these areas with a limit on number of people and time of use. Had an issue with spa management and how they dealt with a situation however this was dealt with during our stay and resolved. The massage trwatments were very nice.
The deluxe room did seem like it needed a bit of a revamp. Some damage to furniture etc. To have a balcony was nice. Tea coffee making facilities had no biscuits which is a nice touch i would expect of a 4 star. Towels were also replaced despite not leaving in the bath or on the floor as per the policy which was rather wasteful. Also despite having in room air con control, the room was still very warm at night when on the lowest setting of 19C.
Overall not as good a 4 star experience as many other places we have stayed. Staff were friendly and helpful (with the exception of the spa manager). Sanitisers and distancing was well catered for.

We booked this hotel because we were meeting some friends and honestly I was quite sceptic after reading some of the reviews, but, I must say, I was in for a big surprise because from the beginning to the end the weekend went perfectly well. First of all the hotel protects the guests (and the staff) very well, with sanitation stations and equipment everywhere we really felt very secure. The check-in was easy, we opted for an early check-in so as to try and avoid a crowd and it worked very well because it gave us the morning to ourselves and had time to enjoy a relaxing massage at the Spa, pity we could only use the pool since the Thermal part looked very inviting, it’s sad to see it all closed off. The staff in the spa were lovely all wearing protective masks and all the area was immaculately clean. After a short lie-in in our lovely room, we met our friends in the Terrace, this is between a bar and a restaurant, although there where a lot of people it was not crowded at all, we were even lucky enough to get a table outside and enjoy some sunny moments. Later on we had a stroll in Dunboyne Village – it’s quite small, but lovely, we thought we would eat in a restaurant in the centre but than decided to give the hotel restaurant a go and it was a good idea because we really enjoyed it, we lingered on the table till it was clearly time for them to close. The next morning after breakfast we hired a bike each from the hotel reception and cycled all the way to the next village.

We stayed for one night but encountered multiple issues in that short time. Staff were generally very friendly and apologetic for the issues encountered but the entire experience was poor from beginning to end. Some of the issues were caused by a power outage that lasted for two hours beginning shortly after we arrived. We were happy to accept the hotels explanation for these delays to afternoon tea, check in and some of the services available at the spa. On both days we ate there however, it was incredibly difficult to get any service in the terrace bar. We ate dinner there on check in day and at one point went almost an hour and a half with empty glasses between trying to place an order for a drink and reminding the staff member about the order they had forgotten. This continued into lunch the following day when we had to ask for menus twenty minutes after we were seated and then having to ask for service another twenty minutes after finally getting the menus. On both occasions, staff would actively avoid eye contact while walking back and forth between the Ivy restaurant and the bar.
There were also a number of basic hygiene issues. Cleaning in the terrace bar between guests was very superficial, with a quick wipe down of the table the extent of cleaning, there was no sweeping under tables or wiping down of seating or other surfaces. We were waiting for more than two hours on afternoon tea on check in day and saw many other customers leave so this wasn’t an isolated incident. There was also. O hand sanitizer available on the tables, just at the entrance to the bar. There were multiple hand sanitizer stations dotted around the hotel but many of these were empty the entire time we were there.
With regards to the spa, at no point on either day did we see a staff member enter the pool / thermal facilities area to do any cleaning let alone sanitize any surfaces. There were pools of water all over the floor. from beginning to end of our sessions there. There was also a strong sewage smell in the corridor leading to the Spa on both days, though this seemed to have been addressed right before we left. The lack of staff in the pool area also meant there were individuals openly taking phone calls and photos in an area where mobile phones were not permitted.
The only time that a staff member seemed to act promptly was when housekeeping burst into our room without knocking or announcing themselves an hour before we were due to check out despite paying for a late check out.
The room was comfortable and the staff were friendly but the overall sense of corners being cut and the issues either with training or numbers of staff meant the stay wasn’t as enjoyable as it should have been and did nothing even come close to representing value for money.

Where do I start...
The service in the bar was shocking. Barstaff wore their masks under their chins (no covid precautions). The barstaff Rinsed used classes under tap and served them to next customer. 20-30 min wait for orders of two drinks. Orders served to wrong tables constantly. Staff arguing behind the bar made an uncomfortable atmosphere. I spoke to 2 other tables who said they had never experienced service like it. It was obvious there were a lot of unhappy customers.
On check out, the staff told us we had a bill from the bar the night before for drinks we never ordered. Clearly billed to the wrong room.
This was my second time at dunboyne castle as my first experience was horrendous and as a result recieved a voucher in the hope we could better our experience.
Our first stay was an even worse experience. On arrival at 3pm, we were told our room was not yet ready. At 4.20pm we got a phonecall to say our room was ready. We were handed the wrong bags from the luggage room. We got given a triple room when we booked a deluxe double. Staff at reception assumed we were expecting a third person meaning we got given someone else's room. Finally we got our room at 5.15pm! Raced to the spa to find out there was a charge of €10 pp to use the pool!!
The bedroom had two single beds pushed together causing uncomfort. The shower in the room was so hot you couldn't get into it nor turn it down.
Breakfast the next morning was terrible. The food was reheated and rubbery. We were given a table with no cutlery. We had to ask the staff for cutlery and coffee, then call them back for milk.
I cant believe this hotel has a 4 star rating. We will definitely not be returning or recommending this hotel to anyone. A massive disappointment on both stays!

Lovely reception staff on arrival.
We had great food in the bar and very friendly bar staff.
Rooms very spacious and clean. Lovely breakfast and big portions. Room service was on time and you couldn't say much for the price of €5 per person.

Firstly on arrival no guests were wearing masks at all and there was very little hand sanitizer anywhere.
I checked in at reception and was advised that my treatments would cost €80, however when booking it was confirmed €65 for the two treatments. When I queried this with the receptionist she said I was in or deluxe manicure (instead of Mini Manicure). I advised I had booked mini manicure not deluxe and that this was all confirmed on email. Receptionist didn't seem to be able to change it then manager arrived out to the desk and was extremely rude and abrupt. The receptionist to of the manager "this lady had booked for deluxe and now wants to change to mini manicure" at which stage I interrupted to advise I had never booked the deluxe and had email in hand to prove it. The manager started saying the mini manicure was never the price I was quoted and was extremely dismissive. I had email from spa confirming this booking and price and a screenshot of downloaded list. The manager talking to receptionist then said ok let's check the email and see (very confrontational as if I was lying ) then when they realised that was the case no apology just asked me to insert my card to machine.
I have to say it was an appalling way to treat someone, I was mortified and there was a queue behind me. The manager was theworst, no customer service skills at all and made me feel awful, I felt like turning around and walking out the door. Not the best way to start your visit to the spa with the management challenging you like that when it was a member of her team at fault and then no apology. So unprofessional.
Treatments were terrible also. I was booked for foot treatment and manicure and was lying down for foot treatment. However during the setting time for the treatment, the therapist then began to start prepping my nails whilst I was lying there like she was trying to rush me through.
In terms of the manicure no cuticle cream or remover was used she just started jamming back my cuticles and then when she did the shellac these were all left there some covered in shellac and sore. She also told me they had run out of cuticle oil at the end. When I got home I had to do an hour's work on my nails myself. Also the area I was brought to do my nails was also just a little table in a corridor not a treatment room, so people going to treatments and the pool would pass right by you.
Having been to a huge amount of hotel spas across the country and abroad I have to say it was the most awful spa experience I've ever had and will not be returning.

Stayed for 1 night and disappointed to write that this hotel did not meet my expectations. Despite being checked in early the service at both the bar and Ivy restaurant were below par. We ordered afternoon tea in the bar and we had drank full pot of tea before food arrived. When we left the bar a waiter ran upstairs after us saying we had not paid for haddock & chips yet we did not even order this. This was quite embarrassing as there were other guests on the stairs and my daughter had to go back into the bar with the waiter ! Dinner at the Ivy was very poor. Decor is very outdated and service slow. Wrong dishes were given to wrong tables. No atmosphere at all. Went to the bar afterwards for a drink, again service slow and despite cocktails being 12 euro each the glass was filthy. We were advised to go down to the residents bar as it was approaching 1130 so we moved down there only to be told they were also closing. Ordered breakfast to the room as a treat for my daughter, I ordered pudding and got one piece ! She ordered pancakes and there were definitely not home made but out of packet! Also ordered a croissant but instead got two bashed up pastries. For a 12 euro charge to your room it was such a waste as the whole breakfast was not worth 12 euro. Bedroom way too hot, needs renovation, colour scheme very drab and boring. All in all I would not go back.

We first stayed here for one night because my partner won a voucher for a free night with dinner and breakfast included. We had a great time but mostly because of the Spa. The room was ok but the shower door was broken and the knobs for the water were missing their covers? There was also a suspicious orangy stain in the bath. Food was not worth the price on the menu.
When we decided to get away from our noisy home, we thought we would come back here because we had a good time last time. When we arrived (different room than last time) once again, shower was in a bad state. We paid this time around and went to the spa again. It was great but they should really repair some of the fixtures as theres exposed wiring next to the water. Staff was lovely though.
At night, we COULD NOT SLEEP as there was loud parties all around us. I called the front desk and the nice guy sent over security to ask people to quiet down and they did but you could hear people going up and down the hall loudly. To top it off, we were put next door to a crying newborn baby. So we did not have a relaxing getaway as hoped. I would stay away from the food as it is horrible and bland. The staff know it as when I complained about my pizza (€17) they had a look like... we know, and refunded me.
For €175 for a night, I would've stayed somewhere cheaper and had a better experience as well as a good nights sleep.

Yesterday evening we booked dinner in the terrace lounge for two. The food was delicious and really exceeded our expectations! We had the Cajun chicken burger which was fresh and so tasty and the Fish and chips which I would highly recommend too! Nutella cheesecake for dessert was a dream! We also were really impressed with the staff, they were efficient, friendly and even offered me hand sanitizer after using the card machine. The hotel seemed very covid compliant, with sanitizer stations in all the right places. Over all, such a great experience and would really recommend for a perfect dinner experience! 😁

Nope ... you will need to book ahead transportation , the hotel might help you with this but they don't have their own transport.
It has a hydro pool, for relaxation not swimming. No children allowed
Hi Jentuff, yes you can use the thermal areas(pool), you will need to book, due to current restrictions,
capacity is limited, so book on check-in. There is a charge of €10 per person for an hour. You'll have full access to everything the thermal area has to offer. Also live music started back this weekend, live in the Sadlier every Friday and Saturday from 9pm. Hope this helps.
Yes there is.
