Nothing was too much trouble for the wonderful owners of the Retreat Castle...just perfect! Clean, quirky and comfortable rooms, within easy reach of Edinburgh and delicious breakfast all made freshly to order. We will definitely be back!

Stayed here for two nights for a wedding I was attending close by. The castle was beautiful and cosy, spacious and with really fun decor. Room and en suite bathroom were huge with a 4 poster bed. Great tea and coffee facilities and a brilliant breakfast! Jude who runs the castle is extremely welcoming and helpful. Just be aware of... More

I stayed at the Retreat Castle Hotel for 8 nights whilst working in Dalkeith. Jude is a fantastic host and made me feel very welcome during my stay. As I arrived earlier I was given the choice of the smaller room with a bath or the larger room with the wet room. I opted for the smaller room. It was... More

We had a wonderful time at The Retreat. Jude treats you like family. It was the most comfortable stay we had over our extended stay in the UK. Breakfast was the best! She has something for everyone. She is amazing at remembering every little detail. Superb taste in decorating. She even made me a swatch of grey paint samples for... More

On arrival this place has the WOW factor and it gets even better inside! We were given an exceptionally warm welcome by Jude who was very helpful in recommending restaurants and giving directions. Our room was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and along with a great selection of different teas, coffee and water, Jude had kindly left hot chocolate, a fudge... More

Absolutely wonderful guest house. Large comfortable room, with 4 poster bed. Lots of character and interesting decor. Conveniently located for day trips to Edinburgh, either by bus (across the street) or by driving to park and ride. Very friendly and efficient hostess and excellent full breakfast.

The Retreat is conveniently located just outside Edinburgh. The family staff made us welcome and the room and Scottish breakfast was a wonderful start to the day. We felt as if we were with family. Recommend for any stay.

Two nights here. Very comfortable once inside but it is like Fort Knox - a double front door - notes galore on locking/unlocking stuck on the doors and another heavy door at the top of the stairs - all seemed a little unnecessary and uninviting. A gloomy building - which probably would look more cheery on a sunny day.. Hospitality... More
