Dalhousie Castle Hotel and Aqueous Spa is a magnificent 13th century fortress set within acres of wooded parkland on the picturesque banks of the River Esk. From the moment you arrive at Dalhousie Castle a warm Scottish welcome awaits. Whether relaxing in the the Spa, gathering in the library next to the open fire, dining in the vaulted 2 Rosette winning dungeon restaurant, or retiring to your chambers, you will always feel as welcome as the 'Laird'. Brimming with over 700 years of history, Dalhousie Castle is the kind of place that could have been plucked from the pages of a fairy-tale. But make no mistake, this ancient castle with its complex arrangement of turrets and towers is very much the real McCoy. Once the seat of the Ramsay Clan, the castle boasts an illustrious guest list that includes King Edward I, Sir Walter Scott, Oliver Cromwell and Queen Victoria. Today the castle’s long tradition of hospitality continues and you can still be assured a royal welcome and the highest standards of food and service at this fine four-star hotel. Please note that despite our best efforts it is has not been possible to install a lift in the castle. Instead we invite you to start discovering the castle from the moment you arrive, taking in every nook and cranny and peeking behind unlocked doors and to satisfy your curiosity on the way to your bedchamber.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at Dalhousie Castle and were given a room on the basement which had a well of water in the room. There was literally a well with water in the bottom. The entire room was dingy and needed work and the planks were loose and we felt like we were going to fall through the bottom of the floor. There was a huge spider in the bathtub and the bathtub bottom was dark and dingy. The room needs a major overhaul. Front office staff was very rude in fact all of the women working at the facility were rude to us. We ate breakfast and the lady was very mean to me when I asked for a glass of water. It was a horrible experience and will never be back!!! Do not stay at this place!!!!

Dear Guest, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review of your stay with us. We were saddened to hear of your disapointment with your room, it is infact one of our most requested rooms due to its location and the well, it is also a bridal suite. We are over 700 years old and being situated in the castle walls the structure does creak. We apologise you felt all of the women that worked at Dalhousie Castle were rude to you, this is a comment we have never experienced before on Trip Advisor.

Castle and grounds are amazing and staff are great. The spa is tiny but extremely relaxing if you can find a time with not many people. We were under the impression with the time slot selection that there would be only a handful of people in the spa but we saw almost every guest from dinner the previous night and it was a bit crowded. Once most left it was a really nice experience. This was a surprise for my mom and we loved it. The only negative comment I could make was the breakfast was sub-par. A table service breakfast / fresh to order breakfast would have been just excellent but instead there were long waits and had to walk and flag down staff for coffee, tea, toast. Breakfast buffet was cold and not many vegetarian/vegan options beyond mushroom tomato and toast. Expected

The castle rooms and grounds are great and the staff is exceptional. The prices are reasonable when compared to staying anywhere in Edinburgh. Try the falconry excursion they have on site as well. It was a great place for our family of 4 to stay and visit Edinburgh and nearby towns too.

The service was not good. The reception phone often went unanswered as did the room service phone. The room was dirty and we were charged to use the sofa bed (never had that happen before). The staff did very little to make us feel welcome. Given the location we felt isolated. Really not a good option, especially without a car.

This overnight stay was a treat from our family following my two years of ill health and ongoing issues. Castle and grounds are lovely. Booking was made simple and member of staff dealing with our booking did everything she could to get us the dates and room we requested. Check in was simple and straight forward although girl was new and did not know how to direct us to our room but we managed on our own. Room was very clean and had lovely decor. Bed was very comfortable. Service at our evening meal was excellent as was the food apart from my steak which was not the quality of meat I had expected. Great nights sleep with good hot shower in the morning. Breakfast was nice enough but I prefer mine to be cooked to order rather than component parts kept warm in large warming

I can not adequately express how displeased I am. I used Dalhousie Castle's own website, clicked on the tab for dining, then chose the evening dining option and from there the Dungeon Restaurant information came up with the option to book a table. I selected the button to dine in that restaurant and received a confirmation on June 1, 2022. Twenty-Five days later I was informed via email there they will not honor that reservation due to that restaurant being reserved for customers staying at their castle. There was not and still is nothing stating that dining in that restaurant is reserved for travelers who've booked a room with them.

Castle and grounds are very well. But best times of this hotel are over. The crew is friendly. The Dungeon restaurant is really nice and the food was good. Breakfast in the Orangery could be better and with more choices and not in buffet but serviced.

What an amazing hotel. Beautiful room with stunning views We were in room 14 and it is massive! Will definitely be back. Would like to see more options on Dungeon restaurant menu and was not much choice of my liking. Well run hotel!

Room was a lot smaller than anticipated, dinner was o.k. but tasteless but the dungeon was quirky. Breakfast was extremely poor the room it was served in was filthy as were the chairs which I really didn’t want to sit on.

We had the Honeymoon suite and it was simply amazing. Grounds, food and staff all perfect! 14th Century Castle is very old but that is the charm of the hotel. Converted to 20 century uses very well. The Dungeon resteraunt is great and the food was spectacular. We walked for miles thru the trees and forest to discover a bit of Narnia. Great place for couples to spend time together.
