I had an old guide book and so was expecting the old. Luckily they put me in an old room that was clean, spacious, comfortable and with lots of character and a fireplace, not that I used it. I love the smell of old wood. The new was the reception and dining building, which I was not a fan of. It had a very "mass tourism" feel to it and I could imagine it with hordes of tourists and tour buses as that is what it looks like it was built for. Not my style. Everyone was very nice and accommodating though, and with COVID it was not that busy and so that was a good thing for me.

Hotel's Favourite
My third stay at this resort and better than ever. Phenomenal customer service-they knew what I needed before I did! Wonderful birds, plants, and mountain views of the cloud forest. Hiked all the trails to waterfalls and through bird filled forests. Loved the view from their mountainside platform, a great massage and amazing food. My room was spacious and the gardens the best time in the valley. Clouds of hummingbirds were always present. Love the owners and staff Marino, Felipe, Matilde, Juan, Byron, Erick and others. I will return soon!

The 9K drive down to the hotel from the paved highway got our attention. Suffice to say the road is narrow, steep, and twisting (and even paved in sections) but totally manageable. The hotel and grounds are superb, from reception to the restaurant, trails, rooms (we had a junior suite), to the spa where I received a blissful massage. The entire staff made sure our 2-night stay put smiles on our faces. In early March when we were there it got cool (40’s F) at night so the blankets on the beds were most welcome. And my jacket came in handy for my 0530 Quetzal Birdwatching tour when it was still dark. The tour itself was an astounding success! My guide (Melvin I believe) drove us up the road a short distance, parked, got out his scope, heard a Quetzal calling and immediately sighted the colorful male bird in a nearby tree. We watched it long enough for M to take a video of it on my camera, through his scope, giving me both visual and audio. It then flew to another close-by tree where a female was perched and whose picture we also got, through his scope. What a morning! And what a considerate guide to get those photos for me! Our room was very spacious and comfortable with lots of windows for natural light, bedside lighting for reading, and an elegant bathroom with candles beside the tub. As a vegetarian I appreciated the staff and kitchen working with me on menu choices while my omnivore husband enjoyed the entire menu happily. The fresh fruit plate at breakfast was something to look forward to as well.

While in the area I booked a 5 hour birding walk through Savegre. Melvin was my guide. He is AMAZING. His patience & knowledge was a true gift. 25 life birds! The Resplendent Quetzal (of course), White-winged Tanger, and the Flame-throated Warbler were the highlights, among many others. Thank you Melvin!

We live on the coast of Costa Rica and our house needed some major work done so I decided to find an “off the path” stay for a few nights. San Gerado is a dream. The river, the cooler weather, the mountains, the cloud forest, the birding (which, I’ve never cared about but somehow found myself interested)...it’s all magical. The drive from highway 2 is pretty gnarly if you’re not used to mountain driving, by the way. Narrow roads with drop-offs, intense switchbacks. Not a fan but it’s worth it. This hotel was lovely. The grounds were amazing and the reception area, the bar/restaurant were modern, clean, and VERY serious about Covid precautions. The staff was INCREDIBLE. Everyone was wonderful. The rooms... I booked a “junior suite”, which was just really a regular room room. It had a fireplace which was so nice, plus a heater, which we did use! The decor in the rooms reminds me of when I started traveling to CR almost 20 years ago. It’s rustic. It was very clean. And overall for the price, I wasn’t disappointed. But it could use some updates. The food in the restaurant was pretty good. The breakfast was included and really nice. Their pizza was AMAZING. The hiking trails were great and they will even drive you up to the trailhead (which I suggest because that walk is a hike in it of itself!). There’s a beautiful lookout bridge at the trailhead with bathrooms and water. WiFi does NOT work in the rooms, which was a problem for me for work reasons, so I had to spend a lot of time in the bar lounge area. Not a huge deal but I was told it would work on my computer and it didn’t. I highly recommend horseback riding with Sebastian and make SURE you go to Cafe Kahawa and have some apple pie. Best I’ve ever had anywhere. We will be back when we have friends or family visit after Covid
