We met a lot of people who had been to Monteverde and found it cold, wet and windy. San Gerardo in contrast was sunny and warm but with fresh, clean mountain air. Lots of birds to see (including quetzal) both in the walks around the hotel and in the hotel grounds. We did a long walk downhill - very tiring...

The location, scenery and the great bird watching make the area worth a visit. The lodge itself is however very average. It caters very much for medium size tour groups to the disadvantage of small groups and couples. The problem is more acute at evening meal times when if you are unlucky enough to dine just after the bigger groups...

We had an excellent visit to the Savegre Hotel as part of 12 day Road Scholar tour of Costa Rica. The room we had was very comfortable, with good shower and excellent bed. This area gets cool in the evening and we were fortunate to have a room with a wood burning fireplace in it (and a supplemental electric heater)...

The grounds are lush with bird attracting flowers. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed with fireplaces and sunken tub. The food was the best I had in Costa Rica. The trout is locally sourced and delicious. The associated Batsu gardens are a great place for close views and photographs of hummingbirds, Sulphur-winged Parakeets, and tanagers. Resplendent Quetzals were observed every...

We stayed for 2 nights and had an excellent bird watching tour with one of the original settlers grandsons. Saw the resplendant quetzal, (2 of them!) and so many other Costa Rican birds. Walked on some of the routes around the property and had a fantastic experience. Would thoroughly recommend.

The air was crisp and cool, there was occasion fog and the surrounding area was beautiful. There are hiking trails on the property, and another lovely hike to a waterfall within walking distance of...

I was looking for a weekend to beat the noise and heat of San Jose. I had driven through the area many times going to Playa Dominical. I knew this was the area to go for some cool weather. The property exceeded expectations. I will definitely return.

We spent four nights at Savegre Hotel in search of the resplendant quetzals: Saw three so left happy! This is a bird-watchers paradise and the lovely gardens in the property drew in many colourful birds that kept photographers well entertained. Guided tours to find the quetzals, trogons, toucanettes etc are a must and easily arranged at the desk. There are...

We stayed for 2 nights at Savegre and saw a wealth of birds. Marino was our guide and was enthusiastic and determined that we see the Resplendant Quetzal, which we saw on two different hikes. Of course we saw and learned much more that that. His knowledge is unparalleled, since he is the son of the founder of this fabulous...

“We stayed in a room with two double beds. Very comfortable and large for our family of three. We stayed at the top of the property, which I enjoyed as it had close access to hiking trails and we got to walk through the beautiful grounds every time we went to the lodge.”
