I have stayed here with my clients during a 2-week birding holiday. Excellent staff, rooms are beautiful and food is second to none. Clients have expressed how pleased they are with this lodge. The trails are quite productive in terms of birding.

Our group of 3 couples visited for two nights in January 2020 and we all enjoyed the experience. The rooms are attractive and comfortable with good bathrooms. We had breakfasts and one dinner in the restaurant and found the food very good. The hotel has lovely gardens with hummingbirds galore and its own network of trails that are very scenic and offer good possibilities for bird and wildlife viewing. The staff were helpful. San Gerardo is quite a small place but there are still nice options for dining within walking distance and the waterfall trail starts just outside the hotel. Great location and great value. I was tempted to cast a fly for the nice rainbow trout that were swimming about the pond but I don't think that is allowed.

This ecolodge is a newer, smaller lodge than that of the owner’s cousin, the Savegre Hotel Natural Reserve and Spa, which is right next door. Both are almost at the end of a steep, narrow road descending 2700 feet from the highway (Route 2). The rooms in the semi-detached cabins surrounding a small pond are “rustic modern” and very quiet, with the main noise being the stream running past the lodge and the wind blowing through the trees. The dinning room has buffet meals that were OK but not great (makings for a salad, a choice of chicken, fish, pork, and a vegetable dish, and a dessert). However, the various trout dishes were uniformly especially good. The service was excellent and friendly. Several hiking paths leave from the Lodge. If you are lucky, you will see the magnificent quetzal in addition to lots of other birds.

Our room was great. The hiking trails were great. The breakfasts were outstanding. Our only issue was the one dinner we had. Dinner is a set 3 course meal. The soup to start was okay, The trout was overcooked and was served with some vegetables which were tasty. The dessert was a tasteless cake you might buy cheaply at a supermarket. Maybe the issue was we were the only diners. Loved it here, but would not have dinner again.

The location is about 7 miles deep down into a canyon. It's high in the mountains and deep in the cloud forest. We were in Room #7 and it had 2 beds and nice bathroom. Offered a small balcony to see the small pond where you can use there small boats to use. Negatives/recommendations about the room : (1) tiny chairs...they were very tiny and uncomfortable. (2) the location of TV box needs to be raised higher & shelf corners need to be rounded off (husband hit head & cut it. (3) add a handing bar on wall to hang clothes (4) add extra hooks to back bathroom door to hand things. Jessica M. Alvarado (waitress) and Luis (waiter) provided FIRST CLASS SERVICE and very friendly! Lester (cook) cooking was magnificent..highly recommend the hamburger "best I have ever eaten"! The rest of the staff was very friendly. We took almost 3 hour easy hike from the lodge. We didn't get to see the Quetzal but saw lots of other birds around the area. The grounds are amazing to walk around and Max (dog) was very friendly! Highly recommend this place and look forward to going back & hope to see the Quetzal.
