I stayed there to take a tour to see the Respondent Quetzal Mission accomplished. The hotel is a group of cabins that share common walkways, main lodge and so on. The main lodge is just lovely. Great for hummingbirds out back and got some great shots. There was a small path that ran around the main lodge which was a very enjoyable hike. Saw some birds, but no other wildlife. The cabin is definitely cold at night, so be prepared. I bought the dinner for myself and my guide and it was a wonderful three course meal. I was in cabin 5 which had (barely) some wifi connection as it was close to the main lodge. The next morning, their guide took us to a local farm where we saw a male and female quetzal and got some great pictures. Very happy with that. Here are my two concerns. 1. I had originally booked their best room, but realized it only had one bed and needed a separate bed for my guide. So I asked them via WhatsApp and they said they would downgrade me. But they charged me for the higher priced room. In total monies, it was not that large, but in percentage it was almost a 50% upcharge. 2. When leaving, I tried to pay myself and my guide was busy. When I paid, I was asked how much and they said I pay way too much. The front desk person took advantage of my currency challenge and managed to pocket quite a large amount of money. My guide commented that he seemed uncomfortable when they came by, thinking that I had shared it, but did not share it till later. As much as I liked the rest, the overcharge and the rip off when checking out means I will not be coming back with the family. Nor would I recommend this to anyone.

We didn't stay at the bungalows of the lodge, but we have a fantastic lunch at its restaurant. The food was great and the service was optimal. We enjoy taking hundreds of pictures of at least 12 species of hummingbirds during our lunch. The souvenir shop is also good and with nice t-shirts at an affordable price.

We stayed in one of the superior cabins. I loved the view and the place was comfortable. The jacuzzi tub was very nice, especially to watch the sunset. The hummingbird garden was great. I only took one of the hiking trails and it was nice. Especially important right now is how seriously hotels take their pandemic precautions, and they take them very seriously. The staff was very attentive via Whatsapp. Also, the hotel is easy to get to from the main road and doesn't require a 4x4. One thing to note, there is no wi-fi in the room and cell service is limited. It is only available in the lodge. Also, the furniture in the room was a bit lacking with only a sofa and no chairs like in the photos. Other than that we were happy with the experience.

It took us a couple of hours to drive up through the mountains because there were quite a few slow trucks on the road and it used up much more petrol than we expected. Panic! Jorge, the hotel owner, drove to fetch petrol, located us on a mountain road and brought us a large container of fuel. That was before we even checked in! Unfortunately the hotel was closing the next morning because of Coronavirus shutdown in Costa Rica. That evening the food was fabulous, the service excellent, and yes, it was cold in the lodge but I think most people come prepared. The views were spectacular, and the atmosphere was like I imagine being in Bhutan! The bird tour was cancelled but to crown it all a couple of young wildlife photographers took us to a quetzal nest in the morning just before we had to leave. I highly recommend this very special place. Thank you again, Jorge.

Our experience was mixed. This lodge is right on the top of the mountain - great views, great sunsets. The food was good, the main lodge had a lovely fire going, our quetzal guided early morning tour was successful (even though it rained!) This lodge could be really good but down sides are as others have said. Our cabin (no 10) was a) small, the shower was unusably small, the bathroom door had to be open to sit on toilet b) very cold, there was a heater but given the gaps around the door/windows and generally between the wooden planks its made of (think garden shed) and the altitude it was very very cold. The other issue is that the cabins are quite a long walk down the mountain from the main building on steep, narrow paths. If you have mobility issues this may be a game changer for you. It certainly made moving luggage interesting!. Such a shame - this lodge could be excellent.
