Certificate of Excellence
What is Certificate of Excellence?
TripAdvisor gives a Certificate of Excellence to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers.
We stayed at the Suria Lodge on the Rio Savegre with a group of Road Scholar birders. The road in is terrifying but we had a great driver who had earned all of our trust by trip's end. The roadway would be very perilous in...More
Rooms are nice and rustic with big picture windows for you to enjoy during the day. Very chilly at nights but well equipped with blankets and a heater. Views are amazing and there are lots of birds and flowers. Included breakfast is not the best.
We enjoyed our stay at Suria Lodge very much. The rooms were clean and spacious though we did find the heaters in the room were not adequate to keep the rooms warm and comfortable. In warmer weather, that would not be a problem. The service...More
I was pleasantly surprised! after reading not many great reviews i was a bit scared. The staff was very nice and informative. They upgraded my room for a small fee and it was very nicely kept and clean. I did find some ants but i...More

Hi Motte01,
It is probably faster to go to San Jose first and then take a bus in the direction of San Isidro ge General.
The public bus from Quepos to San Jose is around $6-7; they go quite regularly and it takes about two and a half to three hours. To get to San Gerardo to Dota you take a bus towards San Isidro ge General and need to ask the driver to drop you off at km 80. This will be around two to three hours and about $10-11. The problem is then getting to San Gerardo de Dota; there are no public buses from the drop off- you have to arrange a taxi or pick up with the hotel- it is still about 30km to San Gerardo, descending a long and pretty road into the valley.
Alternatively, at least for part of the journey you can use Interbus or Grayline from Quepos/Manual Antonio to San Jose, which is $50 and will be a lot faster and more comfortable than the public buses. Unfortunately, neither company travels to San Gerardo ( it is a bit off the beaten track). You can get a private shuttle to take you San Jose-San Gerardo ( one and a half hours) ; I think it is around $100 each way ( per vehicle not per person). If you want to contact me on facebook and I can help you with a booking Facebook-MyHolidayInCostaRica
Good luck.

Hi DMCCutchan:
I'll have to agree and dissagree with the previous person. I 100% Agree and reccomend you rent a car. Dota is Crazy Beautiful and Dominical... well i'm not a huge fan there are prettier places, however, transport between them... not good is always more enjoyable to have independence and GPS/Waze works just fine. I did the drive not too long ago to Suria which is basically the very last hotel in the San Gerardo area and is was actually quite a fun drive it took me 1.5h to get there... the highway is a extremely high transit route so just be careful and don't lag behind. Once you get to the off-road part yes there are very many hairpins and cliffs but if you are careful and drive slowly you will enjoy it and it will become part of the wonderful story you will tell. I dissagree with "Driving in costa rica is challenging" is not... there are worst places like NYC or CDMX or India... #PacienceIsKey but you should be just fine. Drop the bus idea it will probably be too costly.
Best wishes on your journey to our beautiful country!!
