We had a great 3-day stay at Essence. The top 3 features are: great location to view Arenal (from the swimming pool...), delicious dinners in a friendly atmosphere, very helpful staff for organising outings. However beware: do not choose the tiny bedroom (unless there's no other option), the best quality/price is probably the tent (you wake up with view on...

We stayed at Kelly's place at the end of June, searching for a different kind of family vacation with teenagers. We were two families of 9 people, but Kelly managed to find place for us at very short notice. The rooms were basic, also the bathroom, but the environment and the view amazing, we liked the breakfast very much. If...

We spent two nights at the Essence Arenal, stopping over on our way from San José to Monteverde. Though it's a little bumpy to drive the last eight or so kilometers on a tough rough-road you'll be rewarded with a a wonderful location, extremely friendly staff (and owners Kelly and Nico) and gorgeous cooking, which partly - for dinners -...

We stayed 4 nights in July and enjoyed it very much. We had a private room with private bath which had lovely views of the volcano from the sitting area in front. The only downside was that the room was right next to the kitchen/dining area, which meant we could hear fairly loud music and kitchen noise until 10pm. Not...

We spent two nights in a room for 4 people and ate at the hotel. You just have to like Nicko, Kelly and their staff; they just love what they are doing and it rubs off on everyone else. The views are stupendous, the food is great. We took a horse ride up the hill, which was brilliant and went...

This place is perfect. It doesn't feel overly touristy and is off the beaten path. There is good hiking around the hostel, and excellent view of the volcano, and a great pool. There is hot water in the showers and the rooms are very comfortable. Kelly is a fantastic host who is easy to talk to and who has great...

The owner, kelly is the most helpful hostel owner I have met. I mean every detail of every person staying was taken care of and the meals every night were alot of fun to make. The location is away from the tourism of La Fortuna and next to a quaint little town called Castillo. A beautiful view of the lake...

My family and I (including 4 teenagers) were supposed to sleep 4 nights there but finally stayed 2 additional nights. We really liked it. The place is perfectly located (gorgeous views to the volcano and Arenal lake) and the staff is very kind and helpful. We have slept 2 nights in one of their tents (extremely comfortable) and it was...

We stayed here last year during our 3 week trip and we really had a fantastic time. The people were really caring and the overall crowed here was really nice. They arranged trip for us and always cared about the customers needs. The rooms are not very spacious but we weren?t in our rooms for long anyway. The surrounding of...
