My husband and I were planning on visiting Galway during our trip last month, and none of the options in the city proper really looked appealing. During my research online, I determined that Barna was a nice alternative, due to the proximity to the city and also the fact that it was far enough out to afford more spacious and less hectic accommodations. We had no difficulties finding the property, as it’s right on the main road and steps away from the village’s restaurants, pubs and market. The car park in back is spacious and our little Skoda had plenty of room; the room itself was lovely and well-appointed. We requested a room with a view of the bay, and were not disappointed - - - the huge windows provided a picture-postcard view of the water. Joan, although nursing a cold, was quite friendly and provided excellent advice on Galway; breakfasts were quite tasty and we didn’t lack for a thing. This was our fourth trip to Ireland in about 15 years, and we both felt it was one of the most relaxing trips we’ve ever taken. To anyone planning a trip in or around Galway City, I suggest staying at Freeport House.

Charming guesthouse conveniently on the highway. The owner is a friendly, elderly woman and there's a definite feeling of living in her home. We had a large, spotlessly clean room with a picture window overlooking a cow pasture and Galway Bay. Very affordable (we paid €70 for a double without breakfast in May). Barna is a picturesque seaside village.

We had a nice and pieceful stay during our trip and we enjoyed being on the first floor with an excellent view to the seaside. Our host Joan gave us good recommandations where to go, to eat and what to see. Breakfast was good in the morning, full irish breakfast and fresh fruit for cereals as well. During our stay the wifi didn't work. There is a big parking place behind the house. Lots of greetinx from Cologne, Germany!

we had a family room; the room was way too small for 4 people. especially when we opened our 4 suitcases on the floor, we had trouble walking in the room. extremely small bathroom and shower with unstable water temperature. the beds were uncomfortable because you could feel the wires of the electric blankets underneath the sheets. limited breakfast selection--only traditional irish breakfast and pancakes. host was only okay; seemed friendly on the surface in the beginning but appeared very upset when we ringed her for assistance the second time. she also sounded weird when she said "thank you" when we were checking out, as if her "thank you" was only to force me to have to thank her in return. all this for $220 a night in total. would definitely NOT recommend. stay away from here.

Stayed here for a week in July as a group of 7 with my dad, and husband and 4 kids. "Joan's" Freeport House was my family's favorite place we stayed in Ireland! My family thought I was a genius for having found such a great place just from recommendations on Trip Advisor, since we had never travelled internationally before. (Thanks Trip Advisor!) We enjoyed scrumptious breakfasts, and excellent hospitality. The rooms were clean and well appointed and the beds cozy. Looks like the pictures. Very quaint. Rooms on the back of the house look out to a beautiful view of the ocean pier and an occasional cow munching grass. For families, there is also a 3 bed room where our 3 teen girls stayed easily. There was plenty of hot water and fresh towels were replaced daily (which wasn't typical at other places we stayed) It was lovely to be able to park the cars after a day of touring and then easily walk to great Barna restaurants and not worry about whether or not you should have a pint! The breakfasts were delicious and we didn't feel rushed to finish up, instead, chatting with Joan and Theresa about our plans for the day. They always had suggestions for sites to see and by the end of a week, it was hugs goodbye and we felt a little like family. Should we venture towards Galway again, I would definitely enjoy staying at Freeport House again.

This was one of our favorite B&Bs of our entire Ireland trip (we stayed in 5). We were here for 4 nights. My husband and I got a room with a view of the ocean (as well as the pier on the side). Our daughters got the room right next to us but without the ocean view. We liked both our rooms. Absolutely gorgeous and peaceful. I cannot say enough to express our liking of this B&B: The rooms and bathrooms were spacious. Hot water was plentiful and consistent. Breakfasts were delicious and offered a great deal of variety - everything from brown bread and fresh fruit and yogurt and a variety of cereals to porridge and bacon and eggs and sausages. There are several award-winning restaurants within quite a short walking distance and we were lucky enough to visit three of them. Galway is only a short drive away. It is also quite easy to get to the Aran Islands and the Burren from Freeport House. There is a laundry within walking distance too. What we liked best about Freeport House was our hostess. Joan is everything you want in a host and more. In a country of friendly people, Joan still manages to stand out with her friendliness and gracious hospitality. She went out of her way to help us out more than once. Joan and Theresa treated us more like family than B&B guests, and if we are fortunate enough to visit Ireland again, we will make a beeline for Freeport House.

Joan is a great host and makes you feel very welcome! It is clean and spacious. We really enjoyed our stay. Although I think it would be better to stay in the warmer months though. Donnelly's tavern only a short walk was excellent for a drink and for dinner, very cozy!! Thank you so much!

We stayed one night at the Freeport House this August, and it was a great place to stay! The owner, Joan, met us with a warm smile and kind hospitality. The rooms (one with a beatiful seaview) were very nice; spotless and the size was ok. Joan had several recommendations for a good place for dinner, we chose Donnely's which was very good. The breakfast the next morning was fresh and homemade - a wonderful start of the day. All in all, we were very pleased with our stay at the Freeport House and can strongly recommend it.
