DORMY INN GLOBAL CABIN ASAKUSA Dormy Inn Asakusa is a hotel located along the Sumida River where you can stay at a reasonable price with a great view. From the rooftop public bath on the 10th floor and the footbath, you can enjoy a memorable view of Tokyo such as the Tokyo Sky Tree on the opposite bank. Although the building itself is old, it is an attractive hotel with a breakfast that we are proud of, so please use it as a reference when you come to Asakusa for sightseeing.
My partner and I stayed here towards the end of our second trip in Japan. We were confident it would be at least passable, because that had been our experience at every other hotel in Japan, including the excellent Dormy Inn in Kanazawa. We were wrong, from the beginning the experience was bad, there are very strict rules, including returning your hotel key before going out for the night, then having to retrieve it from the concierge upon returning, strict rules for female guests, including a very narrow window for females to use the onsen, which offended my partner. The other hotel guests were extremely rude and clearly were offended at having to share the lift with my girlfriend. Then the room was dirty and rundown. We went to dinner, considered our options and booked a different place. We didn’t even spend one night there.…
It was cramped, dirty and nothing like it was presented in Booking.com. There is only one onsen with separate times for men and women to attend. Also, each time you leave the hotel you have to hand your room key back in - totally unprofessional and ridiculous. We expected this Dormy Inn to be like the one we stayed in at Kanazawa but it is nothing like it. Kanazawa was fantastic, this place was more like a backpackers or a hostel... completely and utterly disappointing. We were so unhappy and uncomfortable that as soon as we saw the room we didn’t even stay one night. We checked out within hours of checking in and found accommodation elsewhere for the next 6 nights and it is absolutely brilliant. The only positive was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff who checked us in and back out again almost as quickly.…
Our family of 4 stayed in the family room which is enough for 2 beds and 2 tatami with balcony overlooking the Sumida River. The hotel is located within 10 mins walk from Asakusa Metro Station providing good accessibility. A lot of shops and restaurants nearby for you to hang around. A small onsen on the top floor for hotel guests which is a good facility in downtown Tokyo. The breakfast is a semi-buffet with 2 choices of main dish and a buffet side dish. The late supper (noodle) is complimentary which is famous bonus for all Dormy Inns. It is a good budget hotel in Tokyo.
We loved the Dormy Inn! It was our first experience with this chain. Admittedly the rooms were a little dingy. But they were clean and for us the other amenities outweighed this aspect. The location is fantastic. It's on the Sumida-gawa (Sumida river) directly across from Tokyo sky tree and Asahi beer hall. There's a walking path along the river and yakatabune rentals right below the hotel. You're also just blocks away from Senso-ji and Asakusa jinja, some of the most visited sites in Japan; and the kitchen ware streets (Kappabashi-dori). Asakusa is just a great district to wander around. Get a river view room if you can. The window and door opened on to a small balcony. Our rooms had a mini-fridge; teapot and matcha; yukata & slippers for use in the hotel, and people totally wear these around. It's best to get more than one room if you have more than two people. There were so many services in this hotel we appreciated - nightly free noodles (ramen in shoyu sauce). They were delicious! I gather this is offered at all hotels in the chain. -onsen. No tattoos allowed but they'll give you patches to cover them. The baths have separate hours for men and women. They're on the top floor of the hotel and there's an indoor hot tub, cold tub, and sauna, plus an outdoor hot tub and benches to sit on and take in the view - watch you don't create your own view in return! ;-) -foot bath - also on the top floor, this is outdoors and fun to sit and take in the view -laundry machines available (washer and detergent were complimentary, dryer available for a cost)…
