We spent several days at Kimi after skiing. The location was great - an easy walk to well connected train and subway station. The room was clean and tidy and the staff were helpful and friendly. Best of all, after leaving my airpods behind, they graciously organised for them to be posted back to me - much appreciated!
Kimi Ryokan is a great option if you’re on a budget and a single or couple. I wouldn’t recommend a family stay here. The location is excellent. We loved Ikebukuro and all the restaurants nearby. This was the first time I have stayed in accommodation with a shared bathroom and I was a little apprehensive. It wasn’t too bad in the end. The showers are completely private. I just didn’t love the basins which were all in the open on floor 2 and unisex. Kind of weird brushing your teeth next to strangers, but you get over it quickly. But after 4 nights I was really looking forward to my next hotel with a bathroom. The staff are helpful and friendly. The rooms and bathrooms are very clean. I loved the free hot green tea on tap in the common area. My only complaint is the system for booking the private bath doesn’t really work. There’s only one private Japanese bath, which is truly wonderful, and I tried it one night. But I tried to access it on 3 other occasions and each time I asked it was being used. The problem is you can’t book it, you just ask at reception. But they also don’t know when it will be available again. So you have to keep coming back and asking every 30 minutes. That got very annoying after a while so I gave up. So I only used the bath once which was disappointing considering I was there for 4 days. I suggest they write down the time the bath key is taken so if you inquire they can let you know when to come back and check if it’s available. Not sure I’ll be booking a ryokan with a shared bathroom again as I do enjoy privacy and the convenience of having a bathroom. But I’m glad I had the experience of a traditional Japanese inn at Kimi Ryokan. …
Three and a half stars. On the one hand, the staff is friendly and this place is well-situated as Ikebukuro is a great area to stay in Tokyo and it is nearby the train station. Also I think it is a great deal for people traveling alone or as a couple. For a family of three or more, however, since the price is per person, just note that we have stayed in regular hotel rooms in Japan for cheaper (and yes those rooms were smaller but also included a private bath). We have also stayed in a more traditional ryokan in Kyoto that offered more all around (more room floor space, free tea within the room, private bath, etc). In comparison to that place, which felt like cozy rooms in a big house, Kimi feels more like a hotel with rooms decorated in the traditional style. But ryokans are hard to find now so the tatami-mat rooms here are admittedly a nice alternative to Western-style rooms in Tokyo. I was leery of the shared bathrooms at first but they ended up not being so bad, and they were very clean, everything there was, in fact. There is also a furo on the second floor, which was quite relaxing. The rooms weren’t insulated that well but the heaters help with that. And again the staff is quite kind and helpful. I obviously really struggled to write this review as I have mixed feelings about our experience, but if you are solo and traveling on a budget, it is worth a try. …
I usually stay with friends when I’m in Tokyo, but my family wanted to spend Christmas and New Year’s in Japan this year so we booked several rooms at Kimi Ryokan. We couldn’t have been more pleased with our stay. The staff is friendly and since most of my family cannot speak more than basic Japanese phrases, it was really helpful that almost everyone was fluent in English. The facilities are clean and there are a bunch of convenient amenities such as washer/dryers, kitchenette, lounge, furo, and vending machines. The location is convenient as well. There is a 7-11 around the corner for food and ATM, about 2 minutes from Romance Street (shopping district with great restaurants, arcade, karaoke, etc), and only 5 minutes from Ikebukuro station so you can easily enjoy the rest of Tokyo. There is a curfew from 2:00 am to 7:00 am, I’m not sure if the staff can accommodate otherwise, since I missed last train, I ended up spending those nights with my friends. With the shared lounge and bathrooms, there’s plenty opportunities to make new friends. We saw several rotations of guests of different nationalities. With its affordability and convenience, I highly recommend Kimi Ryokan, especially to visitors experiencing Japan for the first time.…
Kimi Ryokan is the perfect accommodation for a solo Tokyo traveler. It's got cozy rooms, it's clean, tidy, the price is in-expensive and it's in Ikebukuro West which is super convenient and near to the train station. It was my 2nd time staying here, this time over 7 days, and everything was a breeze! The staff are helpful, there's a common area for hot water, tea and vending machines, and the showers are clean and easy to use and so are the toilets. No fuss, easy breezy and just great!
