I had an amazing staying at Tama Ryokan. Aiko was a lovely hostess, extremely welcoming and friendly. The ryokan was lovely, with tatami floored rooms and paper walled doors, creating a very traditional atmosphere. Location was a stone throw away from the metro, less than a minute away, and two stops from Shinjuku station, the heart of Tokyo. I loved...

For the price, the location is good..walkable to train station and close to Shinjuku & Shibuya..the place looks Aged but clean & enables one to experience Japanese lifestyle.. There are strict rules to be adhered to..so make sure u listen carefully to them when u check in.. esp with regards to cleanliness, thus I'm sure the place is kept rly...

This is a very rustic hotell which I guess is ok value for the money if you get a better room than we did. We were four people staying in one room without the possibility to lock the door. Shared bathroom.

Our Japanese style rooms do lock from the inside, and we can secure any valuables if you like (although theft here is so rare that I can't remember the last time it happened). I try to explain the experience on request, but in the end it is up to our customers to understand what a Japanese style room is. As...

Good location, near Takabobaba JR station, it was a friendly personal stay of the old style Japanese inn. Much enjoyed and would have stayed there on return to Tokyo but no vacancies! Several places to eat locally, between the inn and the station for breakfast.

The location of this Ryokan is perfect, right next to a subway place and a 3 minute walk from the train station which has the yamanote line. The owner of the Ryokan is very nice, the rules are a little strict, but to be fair, they are there to keep the building clean and well maintained. Overall, this place is...

This is a quaint place to stay a few nights in the otherwise busy neighbourhood of Takadanobaba. There are a few rules to be followed, but this goes with every ryokan I've stayed in. I joined a group of friends here who occupied the "official" rooms, there was a smaller room available for me that met my needs. The rooms...

I worked with Michael to book a room at the Ryokan. He had a very reasonable cancellation policy, spoke great English, and provided details about the surrounding area (and Mt. Fuji). For travelers arriving at the major airports late at night, I have been told that Michael sometimes meets his guests at the terminals to help them get to their...

My father, sister, two sons (ages 7 and 10) and I stayed at Tama Ryokan in June 2016 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Eiko was so kind and helpful. My 10 year old referred to her several times on our trip to Japan as the nicest lady he has ever met! Michael was very prompt in returning emails and answering...

Our host was exremely friendly and our room was beautiful. We even received small gifts before checking out. The location was perfect for moving around in Tokyo with a subway and a railway station around the corner. There were also many good restaurants around the ryokan.

It was located very close to JR Takadanobaba station (about 5 min walk). It was convenient to get to places like Shinjuku, Harajuku and Shibuya. Theres quite a few places to eat around the hostel. There was also a McDonalds nearby and a small department store nearby. The owners were really welcoming and polite. However, there is a lack of...

Believe it or not, I gave this review an upvote for its criticism, not for its praise. My wife now has a helper, so I now only get glimpses in passing of how housekeeping is done. When I was working with my wife on the rooms, our intrusions were mostly limited to going into rooms to empty the wastepaper baskets....

Staying in Shinjuku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.
