We had a lovely trip to Balbirnie House. The staff are a real asset to this hotel - polite, professional and friendly. The hotel is decorated beautifully and we especially enjoyed tea and scones in the east wing. There was a wedding on when we were there and this may have been the reason why the hotel was not kept as clean as it should have been. Glasses and plates left lying around in public shared spaces. Dinner was excellent and breakfast was good too. Our room looked amazing and the beds were comfortable. There was a nespresso coffee machine in the room with a great choice of tea too. The cleanliness of the rooms were the only thing that really let the hotel down. Surfaces were dusty and there was a hair on my pillow. Perhaps the room had not been used for a day or 2? Plenty of space to park the car free of charge and the grounds are stunning. Worth a visit.

Room Tip: Avoid when there is a wedding is on as it was perhaps a little short staffed.

We stayed here for a friends wedding, which was fabulous, couldn’t have faulted the day at all. Staff/food/venue etc great. My only criticism is that the room was absolutely roasting and now way to cool it down, window was broken open a tiny amount and couldn’t be changed, we asked for a fan and it never arrived. Because of this we did not sleep well at all

Great location - Classically elegant house set in pleasant gardens, surrounded by golf course and parkland. Exudes a quiet, calm and relaxing environment. Large, comfortable rooms and public areas. Reception were very helpful during my (telephone) booking process, and throughout our stay. Indeed, staff were, without exception; friendly, helpfull and courteous. It was good to see local young people being given employment and training. Our booking was a last minute / spur of the moment decision and only a few rooms were available. But, they managed to fulfil our need for a ground floor room. This was shown as last available and a "basic" room (101). But it turned out to be an excellent allocation. Large, comfortable, well furnished, super king bed and with a walk in shower. Dining, in the Orangey and al fresco on the lawn, provided a very good dining experience. Food was to a high quality - well prepared, well presented and delicious. One slight annoyance was that breakfast food delivery was not phased. Everything arrived at table together; juice, fruit, pastries, coffee and hot plated food were all delivered together. We booked three days DB&B. This was good value for money, the only downside being that the fixed meue for this class of booking proved restrictive and repetitive over three evenings. Two wedding receptions took place during our three day stay but this did not overwhelm the hotel or inconvenience other guests. I don't know if it is only during the pandemic? But ordering food or drinks requires using an App, on a smart phone. We found this a bit awkward and inconvenient (possibly an "age" thing! ). But, tech savvy, young staff, recognised this and stepped in quickly to help, or bypass the process by taking the order manually. We used the hotel as a base, to explore the wider Fife and East Neuk area. But it would be equally good for a relaxing stay within the comfort of the building and surrounding grounds.

When I made my online reservation for an evening meal I noted that I have a gluten allergy. I informed the waiter and ordered a meal marked as being gluten free but still gluten products were placed on my plate. Very disappointing and really not acceptable, will not be returning.

We discovered balbirnie during lockdown when they started doing take away that you could enjoy on the grounds. We were keen to keep going back once the restaurant re-opened. I’ve now visited twice in the last month. One overnight stay with friends where we dined outside and tonight just for dinner outside. Food is great but the service is so, so slow that both visits we’ve been told we need to leave our table. We weren’t the only ones tonight. Luckily we were able to move to another table but others weren’t so lucky. I really think if you can’t comfortably serve 3 courses in 1 he 45 mins then you need to increase the table time. It totally ruins the dinner having to move. The staff need to also check in more with the tables. You can’t order water through the app but it took us a while to get the attention of the staff. I think we will give it a little while before returning. Hopefully they can take some of the feedback on board from the reviews.
