We recently spent four wonderful days at Spionkop Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed every moment from the wonderful history tour to the ambiance, hospitality and great cuisine enjoyed by all. It was everything we needed to enjoy, unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of city life and it was very child friendly especially for our son who is autistic. Daisy,... More

We had the good fortune to hit on this wonderful establishment quite by accident, Our hosts Raymond and Lynette Heron are a delightful couple who make you feel totally welcome and at ease. Raymond and his son Alastair are both historians and run tours of the battlefields and historic sites associated with the Anglo Boer War. The Lodge is ideally... More

Homely hospitality something that is amazing when one is away from home to feel at home in an overnight place. The fact that it is connected to Liverpool football club was a beautiful surprise. Although historically I am of the opposition.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two nights at Spionkop Lodge, Lynette and Raymond were most hospitable and knowledgeable about all aspects of the area. It is always good to stay at an establishment where the staff are happy and helpful and this was the case with Spionkop. Our room was very comfortable and meals in the open dining room were great.... Four of us recently spent a day and night at Spion Kop Lodge. What attracted us was that the Lodge was well positioned for a Spion Kop tour and a qualified tour guide was on site. On our arrival we were met by Alastair who gave us an overview of the lodge, history and surrounding area. After a tasty lunch... More

Stayed overnight on a tour of battlefields between Durban and Johannesburg. I was warmly welcomed by the owners and staff. The rooms are pleasant, the food amazing and the pub exactly the place to spend an evening with a cold drink. Located on the farm utilised by General Buller and Winston Churchill during the battles relating to Spionkop, it is perfect place to gain knowledge of the history while staying in a very comfortable and friendly environment. Highlight is a guided tour by renown historian Raymond Heron, besides the many more activities available.

Stayed here for 2 nights and didn't want to leave. It's in stunning surroundings, the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The dining room had open views and the food was lovely. Spion kop battlefields were very interesting and worth a visit as was Paul kruger's house. We hope to revisit in the near future.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Surrounded by low hills that slope up to the towering peaks of the Drakensberg and Free State Mountains. Spion Kop Lodge is the ideal place from where to explore the battlefields, set on an echo farm in Kwazulu-Natal. General Buller’s headquarters during the relief of the Ladysmith campaign, Mount Alice, is located on the farm. The beautifully restored, 8 bedroomed colonial-style farmhouse, is set in tranquil, secure grounds with superb views. Added to this there are two cottages, offering self-catering accommodation in an out-of-Africa setting. There is a library with an excellent collection of historical books, a dining room, cozy pub and a swimming pool. The owner and registered guide, Raymond Heron (F.R.G.S), guides guests to the many historic Battlefield sites, as does his son Alastair. We have 250 different bird species, hiking on the property and Sunset Boat Cruises and horse riding amongst the rhino, giraffe and various other animals. "Arrive as guests, leave as friends." ... more   less
