Comparatively to other beaches in Portugal, Santa Cruz has much less foreigners. Well known for surfers, it is not much publicised for its natural beauty. Even for natives, its sister Ericeira is more fashionable for better off families, business people, politicians. This makes Santa Cruz remain our hidden treasure. The village is nice, the beaches are really beautiful. There are... More

Quiet. Spotless clean. Beautiful. Absolutely lovely local people. So friendly. Great local bars and restaurants. And a short bus ride from Funchal Machico and gorgeous Santana. Will definitely go again.

Pleasant town to base yourself, with good public transport links along south coast st little cost. Although adjacent to airport, flights are not that frequent and aircraft noise not too bad. Sea front is well maintained, as are range of small restaurants. Delightfully free of English (or other foreign) 'sports bars'. All in all, a good base from which to... More

We stayed at the 4 star Vila Gale hotel on a package with Hotelplan -so half board for 2 adults and a ten year old for 2200 Swiss francs. It was very good value. The hotel was lovely with accommodating staff, good buffet meals every morning and evening with a wide choice, and friendly service. We booked several trips through... More

We spent quite a while in the town that is next to the main hotel and enjoyed some lovely reasonably priced meals and other refreshments in the various café/restaurants. We were there at Christmas time and were impressed by the number of local people that... More

St. Cruz is a very pretty village, with restaurants, bars and a church. If you like walking then the long walk at the sea front whilst looking at the mountains, sea or planes landing are not to be missed.

We stayed in the Vila Gale hotel here at Xmas for a week, the town is small laid out around the square and beach. The town was decorated for Xmas and had lots to see if you looked around, other reports state there are hardly any shops or places to eat, we found an indoor market within a building on... More
