Had a super relaxing day at the location UNTIL my glasses fell into the lake. I accepted that I was never going to get it back - since at this point it was about 15 ft on the bottom of a crater lake - until one of the staffers (lifeguard/kayak operator, I think his name was Erik, but I'm not sure) came up to me in the middle of my Tona bottle and handed me my glasses. My wife and I tried to dive down an get it but to no avail. He was able to dive down about 15 feet, found my glasses and got it for me. He singlehandedly saved my Nicaragua trip. Despite my personal experience, the place was amazing, the staff was nice and the bar/restaurant had a large variety of refreshments. The weather couldve been better, but there was nothing Paradiso could do about it. Highly recommend!

We only spent a few hours there last week, as part of our tour, and wished we had more time! The property itself and its grounds is like a mini oasis! There are so many activities to choose from, and the staff there is awesome! We got to eat at the restaurant located on the beach by the lagoon, and couldn't have asked for better service! The team of servers and bartenders there are just phenomenal, starting with our personal server Walter! Gabriel, Diego, Ulice, Alyaro, and Jaiso were all so cool! The lagoon views are splendid, even though the beach itself isn't that great. The water was very warm, and the optional activities were all great! I definitely would go back there again on my next trip to Nicaragua, as the staff there is truly phenomenal! Mucho Gracias!!

Wonderful overnight trip from SJDS.(approx 2 hour drive) great traveler vibe. Locals come for the day which added to the fun! Good drink and food. We also did the night time volcano tour - well worth it! Rooms are clean and breakfast is included.

We visited Paradiso using their Wednesday Get Away Laguna de Apoyo package, which was $10 per person and included transport from Granada, a welcome drink and use of the hotel and its facilities. This deal is excellent value and our only regret is that we didn’t go more often! We were picked up from outside Iglesia La Merced in Granada and driven by minivan to the hotel. On the way they took us to a nice lookout where we could get some great photos overlooking the lagoon. People were required to wear masks and sanitise their hands before getting into the van and there were good covid protocols in place throughout our time there. Paradiso is located on a lovely spot on Laguna de Apoyo. They have a nice restaurant and bar area with plenty of seating options. There are hammocks and cabanas on the property and there’s plenty of entertainment options available including a pool table, board games, books, as well as water equipment including kayaks and floatation rings. There is a pontoon not far from the water’s edge which is a nice place to swim to. Stand up paddle boards can also be hired for an additional cost. They have an extensive menu with both Nicaraguan as well as international dishes. Their prices are reasonable and the food was fantastic. We particularly enjoyed the fillet mignon. The hotel has a gift shop which also sells things like swimwear and sunscreen. They also offer tours and can organise shuttles to other parts of Nicaragua. A convenient feature of how the day pass was organised was that you got a token to keep track of your bar tab and you just pay in full at the end. You can pay by cash or card. We also appreciated that we could choose how long we wanted to stay for and we just needed to let them know when we were ready to go and they got a taxi to take us home, which was also included in that $10 a person cost. Overall, excellent value, excellent location and well executed. One of the best day trips you can do from Granada Nicaragua.

I'm Nicaraguan, I visited this place with my Nicaraguan friends and I asked the waiter if I was allowed to smoke a cigarette and he said no. After that, I noticed smoking is prohibited under the thatch roof because of fire safety, so I understood the reason. 20 minutes later I see the waiter lighting a "cigarette" to another client (foreigner). On top of that the smell of that "cigarette" had a distinct smell. I approached the waiter and asked him why he let that client to smoke, in which he replied "yeah ok you do it". Paraíso should teach their workers that customer service has to be the same for everyone and that everyone has to follow the rules, specifically safety ones and also that in public places the use of illegal stuff is a bad image to the business because not everyone likes it.

Beachfront location is beautiful. Our room was on street level, so a lot of traps down to the beach and up to accommodation. There are available many activities. Fishing is possible on the beach but boats are not allowed. All restaurants close by were closed.

Incredible setting, wonderful people and fantastic food! We absolutely loved this place, beautiful sunrises across the Laguna.. a thatched bar/restaurant, set on a private 'palm-tree' beach, plus clear warm water to enjoy. The menu is vast and sumptuous, accompanied by a varied cocktail menu of fresh fruit juices. Hidden amongst the jungle flora and spread over several manicured terraces it is a pleasant nature walk just exploring the resort.. expect to be woken by howling monkeys, or the tropical 'dawn chorus'! The owners are great fun, attentive and speak several languages. The overall atmosphere and spectacular views of the crater and Mombacho Volcano had us extending our stay several times.. by far our best hostel find in a year of travelling throughout the Americas :)

Granada's a great colonial stroll: gem of a cathedral; San Francisco Convent & Museum with its Zapatera moaiesque avenuette of statues is my pick. As is The Garden Cafe, one of my favourites in all Central Am. A real Courtyard of Eden, charming service, ice-cold beer, real good food. But that's Granada. Take the shuttle from Oasis Hostel to Apoyo. Not just as a day trip. STAY overnight here at Paradiso. This is the perfect contrast, buoyant in a thermal crater lake, soothing those cobbled street feet. Comfy dorm bed, cool beer, delicious meals, play pool, trivia night, float about in an inner tube or kayak, hike round the shore a bit, read a book, sunbathe on the pontoon, whatehhhver.... The staff are great craic. (Gabrito Garzetta Amigo Amigo is particularly deadpan droll in a good way.) Nothing wrong with a day trip. But that's to miss the changing light of the lake, the afternoon storm, night in the volcano, unpolluted stars, rippling dawn and a hair of the dog in a hammock.

I was picked up by taxi from Selina Granada (who should NOT be promoting tours with Paradiso Hostel) with other tourists and taken to Laguna Apoyo, where we were dropped off without much information or guidance. All we were told at Paradiso Hostel was that we could use the beach, kayaks, and buy lunch. The staff didn’t inform us about any rules, water conditions, or wildlife. It looked peaceful, so I decided to take out one kayak on my own at around 11:30am. There was no one managing the beachfront and no lifeguard onsite. I took the kayak, paddle, and put on a life jacket that was on the ground. After kayaking for about an hour around the Laguna, I began making my way back to the beach front of the Paradiso Hostel. I was in the middle of the Laguna, and the kayak felt unbalanced and it became harder to paddle; I looked behind me and saw that the back of the kayak was filling up with water. I continued paddling harder. The kayak continued to get heavier with water and I was losing balance. I screamed for help in Spanish and in English. There was nobody. For about 5 minutes straight, I yelled for help as loud as I could and continued sinking. The water was about waist deep as the kayak filled completely with water. Desperate for help, I continued screaming and found myself gasping for air, treading the water as best I could. The kayak sank. The next moments were despairing. I thought I was going to drown or be attacked by an aquatic animal. No one was in sight. I began slowly swimming toward the closest shore that I could see, continuing to scream for help and hoping that someone from the Paradiso Hostel would notice I had been gone for almost 2 hours, didn’t they notice I was missing? I looked around in hopes of a person or boat, but still nobody. The dinky life jacket hardly kept me afloat, but I continued swimming. After about over an hour, I reached a shoreline with what seemed to be someone’s house. I could hardly move once I reached land, stumbling and gripping the ground. Truly, I couldn’t believe I was alive, despite the overwhelming nausea and dehydration. Thankfully there were a couple of women in the house who came to help me. Barely able to speak or move, I told them what had happened. They were completely shocked, as was I, and they managed to call the Paradiso Hostel and tell them to pick me up immediately. After about 15 minutes, a driver arrived, not saying much, and took me back to Paradiso Hostel. They apologized, said they would refund my trip, and mentioned that they usually check their kayaks and make sure they are ok. And that was it. If anyone knows how to take further measures to ensure that this NEVER happens to anyone else, please advise. *NOTE: AVOID THIS HOSTEL AT ALL COSTS AND DO NOT RENT ANY EQUIPMENT FROM THEM. IT IS FAULTY AND DANGEROUS. THEY DO NOT TAKE ADEQUATE MEASURES TO ENSURE PEOPLE'S SAFETY AND SHOULD NOT BE OPERATING*

Response from paradisolagunam, Responsable relations clients at Paradiso Hostel

1. Paradiso is a well-established business at the laguna de Apoyo since 2013. Paradiso is known for the quality of its infrastructure and services. To avoid any potential issues with guests, we have very strict processes in place, may it be in the food & beverage, but also in the maintenance of its infrastructure and activities it offers. Paradiso is one of the few places in the country that actually counts with a Lifeguard on duty. 2. Among its infrastructures, Paradiso offers the regulated use of Kayaks, with a lifeguard on duty. Kayaks are a water sport activity, with a regular maintenance. They are checked every evening at the end of the day. If a kayak presents a defect that can be repaired, it is put out of usage and sent to the on-site workshop where it is repaired with fiber glass and resin by professionals. Kayaks are purchased regularly, and kayaks that are over 3 year old or kayaks that can’t be fixed are put out of service permanently. 3. There is a sign by the kayaks that explains the rules of use of water equipment’s, with rules and recommendations where it mentions the mandatory use of life jackets (“Life jackets should be worn or taken on the kayaks”). It also says that “water equipment’s are fragile and may break”. It doesn’t mention that the lake doesn’t have deadly species such as sharks, but it is assumed as common sense given that it is a closed volcanic sweet water lake. If any doubt, guests are inclined to ask for information to the lifeguard or the staff. The life Jackets are recent and always renovated, with a triple clip for adults up to 100g (220 lb). 4. In the 7 years of Operations, Paradiso has provided over 100 000 services of kayaks (50 a day), and never has one sunk, because of the rigorous system in place. Any incident of kayaks getting water infiltration is the result of hardly foreseeable technical problem, not of negligence. 5- “The staff didn’t inform us about any rules, water conditions, or wildlife”. The staff explained that the life jacket is mandatory to wear, as they do to every single guest. Water conditions are visible from the shore. If we know about a storm or if we see strong winds, kayaks are always put out of use with an explanation as of why. Wildlife involved hundreds of species as this is a natural reserve. If there were any dangerous animal, it would be mentioned. In case of doubt, guest should ask to reassure themselves. 6- There is a rescue process when either a kayak has been gone for over 4 hours (2 hours is an average usage) or if an acquaintance gets worried. All businesses around the lake get a notification (sometimes guests pay a visit to acquaintances in other businesses or stop at a local bar/restaurant), and then 2 kayaks are dispatched on the lake until the person is found weather in need of help or not. If the unlikely event that the search doesn't lead to a rescue within the hour, authorities are warned and join the effort. Water equipment, beach or lakes in general offer a wide diversity of leisure. But as in any sport, people need to use caution, and service providers need to be responsible and strict on policies and regulated use. We are renown for being a very professional resort, with continuous improvements, and will always thrive to provide the best service possible to our guests.

We booked a day trip to the Lagoon via Paradiso’s Facebook page - it was so easy and cheap! $14 per person for transport and free access to the lagoon, sun beds, kayaking and the facilities. We basically had the beach to ourselves. The food was great and the whole day was one of the best in our holiday.
