We went there for a special lunch and were most impressed. The place is owned by a lovely lady and she was not there that day but you could tell by the suroundings and artifacts that she has very good taste. In fact the food was served on Banana Leaves and was an excellent selection of Indian food. The service...

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the Bangala during our 18 day trip to South India. This was one of the most anticipated of our stops and we were not disappointed. We celebrated my wife's birthday while we were at the hotel, and they made it very special, by having a cake, and providing a taste...

The mix of traditional combined with a touch of the European makes for a pleasant ambience at The BANGALA. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully decorated with clean and pretty linen. The location is fairly good as you have the option of taking an auto ride to the little town, looking around, and eating the local fare at the small eateries...

One of the major objectives of our trip to India this year was to stay at The Bangala, from which I had bought their recipe book last year, whilst visiting other places in Chettinad. As soon as we walked into the place there was an assured calmness and the whole pace of life seemed to slow down. The room was...

Nice property in a very interesting area of India. Highly recommend taking a tour of the Chettinad homes with the hotel staff. Rooms are comfortable, old fashioned, with a large shared balcony. The food is good, but, in my opinion, not extraordinary. There is no menu, you are served several different courses. Breakfast is a little strange because you are...

This was my second trip to The Bangala after a gap of almost 12 years and amazing as it may seem it was reassuringly the same yet even better! I had raved about it so much to my family and was extremely nervous about whether things would be the way I had described them-I needn't have worried, kudos to Mrs...

The Bangala is a delight: a wonderfully personal and warm welcome, excellent food and spacious rooms with plenty of shady outdoor space adjacent to them. But what sets it apart is the awareness of the immensely rich cultural life - geography, history and food - of the Chettinad region revealed in the range of books freely available to guests, the...

We had dinner only at this place after reserving a table for the night, the food(Rs.1000/person) was pricey for the menu and taste, nothing great to mention about Chettinad food and It was very salty, sure to get high BP if we eat every day but I think it is a common issue elsewhere too. We being a Chettiar family...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Bangala is a heritage hotel in Karaikudi, the heart of Chettinad. Now in its 12th year, it is renowned for its local cuisine and warm hospitality. All rooms are air conditioned and with attached bathrooms. Amenities include a swimming pool, gym, massage center , library, cycling, etc. Chettinad is a small area accessible from Madurai, Trichy, Tanjore and Rameswaram. It is the homeland of a Nattukottai Chettiar community, a community that made huge fortunes in south east Asia during colonial rule. These fortunes were used to build amazing mansions over the past 200 years, that evolved in style and scale, and needs to be seen to be appreciated. It is a little known destination but should not be missed. ... more   less
