When we arrived, we immediately got offered a welcome drink while we were filling in the paperwork to check in. The hostel has an amazing atmosphere and the people who work there are really really friendly. We also got a cheap and delicious two course dinner there and of course after dinner drinks in their bar. The dorm we slept...

Hello Thank you very much for taking the time to review Coffee Shack, and that you would "recommend" staying at Coffee Shack. Glad you enjoyed staying in the beach side rondavels, we recommend them if you want a little more space. Although some people do not enjoy crossing the stream at spring high time. Safe travels and we hope to...

I cannot recommend this place enough. We went here on a whim two years ago, and came back this January! It´s a stunning place to visit. High rolling hills, beautiful beaches. Cliffs, waterfalls! This place has it all. And you can stay at no better place than coffee shack. First of all the food is UNREAL! It´s the most delicious...

Visited with mom n cousin on our last leg of the wild coast journey. The dorm had six beds n climbing on top beds required some gymnastics moves since the beds do not have ladders. The bathrooms were the best of all the backpackers we'd visited during our wild coast trip. The place was organised n well kept. The hike...

Hello Thank you very much for taking the time to review Coffee Shack, and great to hear that you “had a truly relaxing, fabulous time” and, despite some of the challenges, (those are usually what one remembers most years later) are going to visit us again. Regards to your family and Qaqamba, from the Coffee Shack crew. Safe travels and...

Camped in the area overlooking the ocean.. Beautiful sunrise one morning. Very nice backpackers. Great dinner and loads of activities to do. We did surfing lessons which were fun and a bargain at R50pp. The showers etc were very nice and clean. Not great wifi but that's to be expected since you're in the middle of nowhere, and you shouldn't...

Hello Thank you very much for taking the time to review Coffee Shack, and great to hear that you would “absolutely recommend” staying at Coffee Shack. Thanks for noting the free Wi-Fi, which as you mentioned is not very fast, particularly when compared to the city. Please understand that due to our remote rural location, we have no alternative but...

This place is so cool! Been staying here for a few nights. Really decent prices for some amazing food and drinks. Cocktails in the bar are delicious! Free mussels and oysters before dinner at the bar. Super chilled vibe. Day trips are affordable and good fun, the hike to hole in the wall is not to be missed - although...

Hello Thanks you very much for taking the time to review Coffee Shack and great to hear that you had an awesome awesome time! Thanks for mentioning the free mussels and oysters that we serve at the bar every evening, (ocean permitting of course as they come fresh from the sea), these little free treats are often over looked and...

Easily one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in, the vibe here was great! I planned on staying for 2 nights and ended up staying for a week! Very social atmosphere and great staff. The food was great and the activities were well planned, all were really cheap! The location was incredible and surf lessons were really well done...

We stayed two nights at Coffee Shack in the rondavel on the other side of the river. If you want a bit more privacy and less backpackers partying at night, this is a good spot. You will still hear some of the parties (from coffee shack or the other backpackers around) but not as loud. We loved the hike to...

We stayed in one of the huts. The hut was clean and the bed really comfortable! There is a kitchen (remember to ask the code!) to cook some food and the bathrooms are allright. Downside to the huts is that they are seperated from the backpackers by a river. When the water rises, the only way to reach the backpackers...

We stayed in the cute little tents that they have outback ontop of wooden decks... try and get the very end one so that you can have a view of the ocean. Hello Thank you for taking the time to review Coffee Shack, although you may have confused us with one of the other places in Coffee Bay, as we do not have tents for hire currently. Seriously. Coffee bay is one of the most beautiful places I've been and Coffee Shack knows it. I slept in a dorm room that was actually a circular hut so I got to tick that one off my list for starters! Surf lessons are R50, cheapest lessons you can get in SA. The atmosphere in Coffee Shack is always positive...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Explore, discover and enjoy a unique taste of rural Africa! Coffee Shack is a backpackers' tropical paradise, located on the beach at the Bomvu River mouth on the Wild Coast of South Africa, where you will experience a way of life far removed from Western culture. We have a reputation of being a fun, good-value hostel with excellent facilities and the most amazing, friendly staff. We offer accommodation in traditional, thatched-roof huts, ranging from private rooms to dorms, as well as camping facilities in the garden next to the beach. Choose between self-catering options or try our delicious meals with a free 'potjie' meal every Sunday night. Weather and ocean permitting, join us for daily sundowners with magnificent views or taste freshly caught oysters and mussels at the bar before dinner. Stay for five nights and get your 5th night free! Our 'Babalaza Bar' is fully licensed and rocks in the evenings with its free pool table and range of drinks and cocktails. Join in the Killer Pool game or enjoy the chilled-out atmosphere around the firepit. Our variety of day trips include cultural walks exploring the local Xhosa culture, a traditional evening of dance and song at the home of a local family where you can try traditional Xhosa food and beers, beach days on the beautiful Coffee Bay, surf lessons, exploring Mapuzi cliffs and caves, hiking to the legendary "Hole in the Wall" or just walking in the local countryside with one of the local guides. We are accredited by Fair Trade Tourism South Africa and are committed to the improvement and upliftment of the greater community through various education and support projects. We are dedicated to making a difference to the local community and are thus 30% owned by the local Tshezi Community, who receive direct financial benefits from being involved in the business. We aim to encourage growth and empowerment opportunities for the local community through the development of meaningful partnerships. Coffee Shack runs a daily shuttle to Mthatha to meet the Baz Bus and other mainline buses at the Shell Ultra City in Mthatha (Umtata). We have free WIFI, safe parking and a laundry service. For self-drive, we are located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, in the former Transkei area. Turn onto the Coffee Bay road approximately 20km south of Mthatha, continue 80km down to the coast. ... more   less
