We came to Yamagata to visit wineries in the region and we spent one night in Takinami. We have stayed in dozens of onsen ryokan and this one was on par with the the better ones as far as the room, the food, the baths and the service. Location: This hotel is located east of JR Akayu Station, about 5-10 minutes of drive or 30 minutes of walking. The hotel provides free shuttles for guests betwen train station to hotel, just make sure to reserve shuttle in advance (you can also ask previous hotel front desk to call them to make shuttle reservation). There is not much around...

If you're looking for a traditional "Ryokan" experience, with friendly staff and rich history, this is the one that you should stay!! The room that we stayed was big enough for 9 people for 4 of us that were traveling. Huge 2 tatami room with "Shoji" door in between, with private toilet, a bathroom with 2 sinks and a bath...

Takinami is a traditional Japanese style ryokan. The entire ryokan is made up of various sections, each having its own unique background. Great hospitality was shown by the owner and staffs of the ryokan, making sure our stay here was comfortable. Welcome to Takinami. This Traditional Ryokan has a 300 year history as the residence of a local, wealthy landowner. Over the years, the buildings have been renovated and today it operates as a traditional ryokan. Takinami has 35 guest rooms, and 25 of the guest rooms have their own private bath and toilet. There are indoor and outdoor hot spring baths for both women and men (same gender only). Traditional Japanese cuisine is served to the guests at Takinami.
