Stayed one night during my Kumano Kodo hike. Such lovely host. Meals were delicious and the packed lunch for the next day's hike was filling. Really liked the room with the sun room overlooking the river. Simple venue, renovated from an old school. I liked the retro school feel and good reuse of building. Allowed me to have breakfast at...

I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers who said that this was a poor value compared with other accommodations on the Kumano Kodo. Before you spend time reading this review, here's the most useful tip I can give to those planning a Kumano Kodo trek: If you're taking the Nakahechi route, you do NOT need to overnight in Koguchi. Stayed at koguchi sizen-no-le lodging, which is a restored school. It was the most expensive place we stayed at on the komano Kodo, or anywhere ever in fact. maybe because it was only one of two places there. There were four of us and it cost 32,000 yen ($432 AUS) for one room with four mattresses that spanned the length...

Old school turned into a camping / minshuku style accommodation. Long corridor, shared basin, canteen - all made for a different experience. Free use of washing machine (washing powder available). 100 yen per 60min of dryer usage. Aircon/heater at 100yen per 2 hours use. 1 western style toilet. Meals are very homey. Love the communal dining with fellow lodgers. Owner...

we stayed here the third night of our trek on the kumano kodo trail. this is a converted school house run by a couple it seemed primarily for hikers. the food presented included a good variety but nothing special. the place was very clean and quiet but I think you had to put money in the meter for heating at...
