The chef Karl is a genius. Not for him the fancy titles of Haute Cuisine. A mere statement of the main ingredients of the dish suffices. And yet you are always surprised and delighted by the results. Every detail is carefully considered, and well judged. And the presentation is understated, but beautiful. Not for Karl the blob-and-skid-mark-on-a-slate style. Oh no....

This venue is described as a restaurant with rooms. It's located off the beaten track in a charming rural location. The buildings date back beyond medieval times and have been beautifully restored, with the accommodation around a central courtyard. The restaurant serves an inspired and good value tasting menu. The staff are friendly and helpful - a special mention here...

Booked this amazing 11th C property for New Year's Eve. Their tasting menu was inspirational. Lots of walks near by plus great service from Manager Willem and staff. The rooms are comfy and have loads of character and the peace and quiet are perfect.

Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was well appointed and welcoming. We had the full board option with the 7 course tasting menu which was a revelation- and boy were we full!! The breakfast was locally sourced and again it filled me into the evening. We had a twin room across the courtyard that had been appointed tastefully and...

Met up here with some friends for D B and B. It was perfect, the staff were charming and attentive, the room was spacious and very comfortable and dinner was a real delight full of interesting and tasty surprises. Breakfast too was a revelation, who would have thought that a full English could look so different yet all the flavours...

We stayed as a couple and with an elderly relative. The atmosphere was very agreeable and the rural position very quiet. The staff were very helpful and were very considerate towards our companion. The food was really first class both at dinner and breakfast, with an imaginative dinner menu. The rooms are all ensuite and positioned around a courtyard; they...

We'd been here before so we came back and stayed a night enjoying their 9 course (!) taster menu. Words fail me... The room was lovely, the food was superb, the service was even better, the location perfect. Honestly - if I could afford not to work I'd stay here every night. It's not cheap, but you get what you...

10/10 for everything! Service, food, room, setting everything was incredible! Will definitely be back. My happy memory will be sitting by the fire with a glass of wine reading the Sunday newspaper. Sunday dinner was not available so we just went down the road to The Clive and had a delicious meal there, but we did have breakfast at the...

We were attending an event in Ludlow on the Sunday and couldn't find anywhere suitable to stay in Ludlow so we cast the net a bit wider. Old Downton Lodge is about 15 mins. from the centre of Ludlow in a very rural position. We stayed for two nights - the Saturday and Sunday. It was pointed out upon booking...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Fascinating. Intriguing. Mesmeric. Pure escapism just seven miles from Ludlow, in some respects, Old Downton Lodge defies description: It is not a hotel, nor is it really a bed and breakfast or a restaurant with rooms. Each of the nine bedrooms are unforgettable – stylishly converted from historic farm buildings surrounding a flower bedecked courtyard, each is quirky, luxurious, packed with history and designed to make you smile. The hospitality is relaxed and genuine. The food – served in a dramatic dining hall - is exceptional and the wine list inspired. ... more   less
