On the road to Junquillal Beach look for the sign on the right for Casas Pelicano; it mentions the cooking classes. Follow the dirt road parallel to the beach to reach Casas Pelicano. We were enthusiastically greeted by two dogs, followed closely by Sibylle Altenkirch, who provides cooking classes, meals to guests at the boutique hotel and local catering. Sibylle formally trained as a chef, and was a founding chef at Nil Restaurant, in Hamburg Germany. She has lived in Costa Rica since 1997. During that time, she has explored the local cuisine and practiced the true art of fusion cooking. She will tailor the menu for your likes and cooking interests, so it is best to plan a little in advance to give her time to shop. Bring your own drinks (we brought wine and seltzer water) to have with the meal, and while cooking if you wish. We started by sitting on the deck discussing some of the ingredients, especially the fruits and vegetables, that might not be familiar to those from northern climates. Then we got to cooking. I was especially happy to have Sibylle take the time to teach some simple techniques, like separating an egg and peeling ginger with the edge of a spoon. For more advanced chefs, she clearly could delve into deeper discussions about the combinations of ingredients and advanced techniques, but for a beginner like me she started where she could make the most difference, knife safety and building confidence. We prepared 7 dishes that we ate in a leisurely three courses. Between courses we returned to the kitchen to put finishing touches on the next course and plate the food. It was a relaxing several hours that felt like spending time with old friends. The view from Casas Pelicanos is striking. It was a perfect day to sit in the shade, listen to the crash of the waves and enjoy good food and good conversation. This activity would be great for older kids and anyone with an interest in delicious food.

We didn’t get a chance to stay at Casas Pelicano (they were booked) but we did an almost 6 hour cooking and feasting session with Sibyl. What a treat! We discussed recipe preferences with her in advance, and the result was a Tico-based 4-course midday feast with a creative flair derived from her extensive culinary experience. Their beautiful place overlooks the surf at the north end of Playa Junquillal, so after 3 hours of learning and applying techniques in the kitchen, we spent another couple of hours eating the results, drinking wine, and chatting. Delicious. Wonderful day. Can’t wait to try some of the recipes at home.

We went there at the beginning of the rainy season which was a great idea for there is green as far as you can see. The bungalows have everything you would need, except a TV (and who would dare to watch TV there, right). They are 50m from the beach and you can enter the beachline from the property. Cleaning service comes every two days. The hosts themselfes are germans and unbelieveably nice and helpful. The have dogs, but those are the nicest ones I have ever met, you will like them. They come visit every now and then, because you are on "their" territory, but they are really lovely! =) There is a supermarket 3min away by car (recommended) which is run by Diego and the "Surf Cafe", run by Orion - he makes the best burritos and smoothies!!! If you are the surfing kind of type you will have found the perfect spot. One more thing. The sunsets are awesome and there are several places from where you can watch them. Just ask the hosts. All in all = perfect place to be! Absolutely recommendable. I will go there again.

Our visit lived up to the other reviews, which I will not try to repeat. Our son and his girlfriend worked at a nearby non-profit for the summer, and we were fortunate enough to stay here for 5 nights. Sibyl and Johann went above and beyond for us. They arranged for our son and his girlfriend to stay inexpensively in the second cabin for a few days which was a luxurious respite for them. Johann purchased bus tickets for us when he was in Santa Cruz so we were guaranteed seats on our way to the San Jose airport. None of us are expert cooks, and we learned so much not just about a particular recipe but about how food "works" when we took a class from Sibyl. Swimming is good at Playa Blanca but be sure to go at low tide for safety. A lovely place to relax. Highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed here 6 nights the beginning of June ... what a great find! Sybil and Jochen were fabulous hosts- thank you for the Pura Vida experience. We stayed in the 2 bedroom cabina, it had everything we needed. Lots of fans which kept us nice and cool. They had a hammock and beach chairs and 2 lounge chairs by the pool. We even had Sybil cook dinner for us which she delivered to us in the rain! She's a great chef! We will definitely be back! Loved our long walks on the beach and just chilling by the pool absorbing all the beautiful foliage on the well kept grounds. We even heard monkeys! Thank you again and look forward to our next visit!
