When I checked into the hotel, the manager described the room. He said that the room came with a mini-fridge (you really need one because of the heat). Right away, I could see that mini-fridge was missing. I talked to the manager 3 times about this situation. Each time he replied,"I'll get the maid to get it".After 6 days, there was still no mini-fridge. I had to buy a cooler and ice for it everyday. Finally, I told him that I would not leave his office until he got one for my room. At that point he delivered the mini-fridge to my room. Never stay at this hotel. The service is horrible.
This is a very long overdue review, but we still often talk about how amazing our time at Ritmo was. We stayed there for a week in December 2016 (unable to select an earlier date on here) and there is no doubt that when we are back in Mal Pais we are going back to see Jonathan & the rest of the staff! We were fortunate to be booked into the upper suite which overlooked the bungalows and pool in one direction, and into the lush jungle in the other. The howler monkeys could be seen in the distance, and the iguanas were basking in the sun on the roof. It was peaceful and away from the main intersection so the nighttime sounds were muted in order to enjoy the jungle. Ritmo was exceptionally clean: pool, restaurant, rooms, grounds, landscaping...everything! We couldn't have been happier with our choice! We only ate dinner in the restaurant twice, and the pizzas are delicious!! We decided to stay one extra night and Jonathan had no issues moving us down into a bungalow on ground level as the suite was booked past our initial reservation. The bungalow is like a one room suite, super quaint and comfortable, and again very clean. The main intersection to get down to the beach is only a few minutes walk away, only 5 mins to the beach (a little closer is an access to a quieter section of the beach and tide pools. If you are looking for a nice relaxing place to come back to after a day of surfing or adventures, or love to wake up to the magical jungle sounds, this is your place!
Finally decided to check out this area of the coast after hearing about the quaint town of Santa Teresa that borders on Mal Pais. After an extensive search, we chose Hotel Ritmo Tropical for it's adorable bungalows and the great price. Each room faces the pool which is a good size. I was also intrigued by the reviews of the onsite restaurant which didn't disappoint. The hotel was walking distance to the beach and many restaurants when we decided ti venture out. All in all, a perfect getaway!
Excellent surroundings in a quiet area only a 5 minute walk from the city. The room was perfectly clean with high standard. The pool area was so good that we ended up spending more time there than at the beach. The staff, and Jonathan in particular, was so friendly and helpful that we ended up staying more nights than initially planned. The restaurant was great and attracted many more than just people staying in the hotel. Last but not least, the price was really value for money. Compared to hostels in the city the price is not a lot more expensive, but you get extremely much more for the money. Will go back any time! Recommended for couples, friends and families at all ages
We planned to be in Costa Rica for 12 days with the final 6 in a relaxing beach town. Since we tire of restaurant food quickly, we planned nearly 3 months ahead of time to find a place with a kitchen. The Ritmo Tropical seemed like the perfect fit so we booked the studio with a kitchenette in January.
When we arrived in April, the manager (and owner's son), Jonathan, told us that the room was no longer available. When pressed for an explanation, he hemmed and hawed and blamed it on a female associate. We said that we might take another room for a night or two and asked when the studio with the kitchenette would be available. He said that it was booked for the entire month and there was no way that we could have it. When asked when the people booked it, he said at the beginning of April.
Jonathan did little to make the situation better. He offered a room without a kitchenette at a slightly discounted rate, which of course was not equivalent. His overall attitude was off-putting. He seemed to have little regard for reneging on his commitment, and he simply told us that we could start looking for another hotel. He didn't even lift a finger to call around town--we had to do that ourselves.
So the only conclusion to draw is that Jonathan saw dollar signs in his eyes and gave away our booking to a new customer who promised to stay longer. We later heard from locals that these types of problems regularly occur here.
If you want to run the risk of getting better-dealed, by all means book at the Rotmo Temperamental!
BTW, we ultimately found a room with a kitchen--The Place. The staff was sympathetic to our plight and provided a discounted bungalow that was much nicer than the substitute room that Jonathan offered.
