Located only 1.5 hrs from Knock West airport, Belmullet sits at the gateway to all that north Mayo has to offer, especially for the outdoorsy traveller. Drom Caoin is just outside the town centre, with stunning views over the nearby hills, the bay and the Belmullet peninsula (a geologist's heaven). From the start you get the warmest of welcomes from the Murphys, including tea and cake, as well as recommendations on places to eat, things to see and how to pronounce the trickier place names - particularly helpful when force 8 gales made field work too dangerous. The bed was comfy, the room pleasantly warm, the internet speedy (especially for the west coast) and the morning breakfast will easily sustain you until lunch (or beyond). A particular plus to me was the ability to leave the car and walk into town for dinner, stroll along the sea front or visit the local shops (including a convenience store, an ATM and a post office; petrol/diesel are available either side of town). Once back, comfortable couches, television and books await in the sitting room with large picture windows and a warming fire. I will certainly be staying again if I'm back in the area.
