My daughter visited in March, 2021. The room was perfect...a welcome place to nap after hours in the sun. The pool was magical...we spent a lot of time quietly on the edge of the pool watching the birds and the ocean. The food was really good. We went into Tamarindo twice for dinner, but otherwise enjoyed the meals on the property.
BUT IT WAS THE PEOPLE!!! that made this trip. The staff here was so warm and inviting and kind and funny and helpful. I get teary thinking about it. We made true connections here and can't wait to come back. Thank you, thank you!

This is our 2nd year coming back to Costa Rica and Fira time at JW Marriott and despite some COVID restrictions our stay was just as great if not better than last year! The pool and beach are beautiful and relaxing and the staff is amazing and so friendly. I had mentioned we were celebrating my birthday and anniversary We came to explore the beauty of Costa Rica and we’re able to go on some great tours thanks to the local tour Operator Pininos Adventures. They were able to schedule us for tours as soon as the very next day and was very reasonably priced. We did a Swiss Travel tour last year and Pininos Adventures were much more personalized. Carlos Recommend to do ATV Tour, Buena vista combo tour and Deep sea fishing, also we book our return to Liberia Airport with them as well..

We felt safe here during the pandemic. The resort is located within a nice gated private community, Hacienda Pinilla. For a short stay you could enjoy the resort and Pinilla w/out the need of a car rental. I am glad we had a car. We did not mind the $30 daily resort fee, bc we took advantage of plenty of the offerings: bikes, a guided nature walk, excellent yoga, a mixology class, a little beach bonfire of toasted marshmallows. We paid reasonable fees at Pinilla to use the very nice practice range at the golf course, and tennis courts. Pinilla also has horse stables and market. The property has a beautiful old Spanish colonial feel while still providing comfort. The showpiece is the pool area. They claim the pool is the largest in Central America, and it has an excellent design with intimacy and great lounge chair access. The grounds have lush vegetation, beautiful mood lighting and music. Our room was comfortable and we enjoyed being able to walk directly out our patio to the beach. The service was fantastic and everyone had a welcome attitude. Everyone was great, but particularly exceptional: Anthony, Alfredo, Dennis, Sergio, Olguin, Marcia, and Adriana. The food was ofcourse overpriced, but good, and only disappointed a few times. Since the occupancy was low, there was generally only one restaurant option per meal, so that was disappointing, but understandable. We were glad we had a car to drive to local restaurants since so many restaurants were closed.

Questions & answers about the pool

Answer from WheelingTraveler
Jul 2019 |
Summer time in Costa Rica will be rainy. In fact I recalled asking Caravan the popular tour company why there are less departure starting June and completely no tour after mid-August till late October, the reason is RAIN. This Marriott resort is remote and you will need transportation to go outside, so you should prepare to pay. I was there in March and the place was hot and dry. So staying there 3 days was enough already for me. There was night market and free show every night in the main square when I was there. And you can also buy excursion like zip lining for day trips. My experience is that the best time to be in this resort is likely around Christmas and New Year.

Honestly, I don't know however, it seems they cater to children and have a lot of floats/games/activities for them so I would imagine they would. You should email their concierge just to confirm so you can reserve them for your trip and then you'll be sure. Hope that helps.

Sobarose asked a question Nov 2017
How late is the pool open?
Answer from Harry E
Jan 2018 |
The pool seems to be open 24 hours, but poolside bar service ended just after sunset. (We visited in the shoulder season, so it may be open later during the "busy season.") As SunnyDay mentioned, there are bats that will come just after sunset, but they seem to only stay for about an hour or so.
