NOLA is my second favorite city in the US. NYC is my first (sorry!), because I get to go there more often. Our daughter lives and works there, so I have been back and forth a few times a year for the past few years. I love history, music, good food and people watching. There isn't a more perfect place in America for this.

Judith R's City Tips

  • Enjoy! Rent a car next trip and see more stuff, eat more places. Lots of po boy shops out and about in the city, lots of coffee shops. Magazine Street - on the other side of the Central Bus District - great place to wander as well (antique mall there is fun, but you can't use the potty there - go next door to Sucre for that, then get a sweet or coffee from them).
  • Have a Southern Candymaker's praline or 2 or 3. Bring some home, too. Worth it!
  • Get your beignet mixes, etc. from the Cafe du Monde shop near the French Market. Best prices and stocked well.
  • Go to the French Market, but try to stay away from the end furthest from the Quarter. The closer you get to the Quarter, the more likely you will be dealing with artisans and artists rather than importers. Also, the better the quality of what you buy. Eat there if you want - great food!
  • Be nice. It's the South. Don't be in a hurry all the time. Slow down, take your time and tip well. Those folks make $2 an hour and share tips.
  • If you have kids with you, for goodness sake, go to the Audobon Zoo and/or Insectarium. Find a coupon on line. Such good places. Even if you don't have kids, go!
  • If you want good seats at the better restaurants, don't wear jeans for dinner. You'll get seated with jeans on, but it won't be in the best spots, with the best people watching, or ambiance.
  • Royal Street is worth the walk down - galleries and antique stores. People like to talk so talk.
  • Stop in Jamie Hayes Gallery as well - good stuff, designed by Jamie, made in a small factory right in New Orleans. Prints, voodoo dolls, and other hand made local items.
  • Go to Dutch Alley Co-op and check out the local artists and artisans who have their works there. Buy something - lots of good stuff for $15 or less. Don't buy crap from the souvenir places - buy some wooden ornaments or a poster and support the locals, not the importers.
  • All of NOLA is a National Park. Stop in the Quarter at Jean Lafitte and get you information (writing it like it would be said there). BEST and CLEANEST toilets in the Quarter in the back of the office/bookstore there - toilets open even when the office, etc is closed.
  • If you've got a car, drive to Chalmette, where the Battle of New Orleans was fought, with Jackson leading a mixed up group of Americans, pirates, freed Blacks against regular British Army redcoats and kicked their butts. Free, great walk on the river there as well.
  • If you are driving, take a ride to City Park (the streetcar also goes there). NOMA is there - great fine art museum worth your time as well (2 hours including the sculpture garden).
  • On the other side of Canal in the Central Business District, the WWII Museum beckons. If you have the slightest interest in history, spend the money and go there. Plan at least 4 hours (more if you have older folks with you). The full service restaurant is excellent and not super costly. Check out their website before you go to make sure you hit what you are most interested in first.
  • Stay off Canal if you can. Chain restaurants and cheap souvenirs aren't worth it. Take a walk on the wild side down Bourbon, though. If this is a family visit, do it before 4 pm.
  • Frenchman Street is worth a walk over. Jazz clubs with no cover, a few great restaurants, and an evening art fair all call you!
  • Say hey when you pass people by on the street in the Quarter. They may be the ones who are going to cook your food, or wait on your table. It's that kind of place.
  • Sitting on a bench by the Mississippi is free. Do it. Don't give money to the gutter punks. Do put a buck or two in the musicians' cases, though.
  • Don't try to do everything in 1 day. Make sure you sit in a cafe (Cafe du Monde has the best non-alcoholic people watching available-otherwise, get you a beer (Abita) and sit near Jackson Square).
  • If you are staying within a mile of the FQ, don't rent a car for your first visit. You don't need one, and driving in this city can be tricky your first time there. Cabs are plentiful.
