Tanya A's City Tips

  • In Miami, as with most American cities, it is customary to tip when dining out and 15-20% is generally considered the standard rate.
  • Taxis are not easily accessible beyond South Beach and public transportation is limited. In order to explore the various different areas of Miami, it is worthwhile to hire a car.
  • While flip flops can be worn almost anywhere in Miami, if you are heading to a more upscale place, keep in mind that many have a dress code, especially for men. Call ahead.

This is a must-do on any visit to Miami. Start with a 'cafecito' at the iconic News Cafe and stroll along the art deco hotels up to Versace's former mansion while enjoying the plentiful people-watching opportunities. You can then cross over the road and enjoy sunbathing on the most famous of Miami's beaches. The lifeguard stands are all painted in unique colors and patterns, making for an interesting stroll along the sand. Night or day, it is always buzzing on Ocean Drive. And as it is the most recognizable part of Miami, no visit to the Magic City would be complete without at least seeing it once.

Everglades National Park showcases a natural and wild side to Miami that is often left unseen. While some visitors feel that it can be quite a drive from the more iconic areas of the city, it is worth the trek to take an airboat ride, see an alligator, hold a snake or perhaps rent a bicycle and take in the scenery through Shark Valley. (Rest assured that despite the name, the Everglades are inland and there are no sharks.) Even for those who are less outdoorsy, it can still prove an interesting destination, as this location has been featured on numerous films and television shows - from Dexter to CSI Miami.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is named after famed botanist and plant explorer David Fairchild, who made Miami his home and introduced many of the tropical plants that are displayed throughout the city today. Not only will you be able to see a vast array of beautiful plants, but there are often exhibits on display, such as the glass artwork by David Chihuly that has been showcased on multiple occasions.

    Tanya A Says:

Coconut Grove is a more bohemian enclave of Miami, with artistic roots and a hippie past. This area is filled with lush green trees and it is not uncommon to see a peacock cross your path as you stroll around. As this area has clearly marked bicycle paths, cycling is the ideal way to explore. Ride down lovely tree-canopied streets, have brunch in one of the charming outdoor restaurants and cafes, or try and spot a manatee by Dinner Key Marina, which is also where The Doors played their infamous show in 1969.

Key Biscayne is an island accessed from a spot between the areas of Brickell and Coconut Grove in Miami. While it's primarily a residential area, Key Biscayne's beautiful parks and beaches can be enjoyed by the public, and it's a great place to kayak, standup paddle board, parasail or simply relax on the sand and read a book. You will mostly find locals on the key, as it is a little out of the way, but the beaches are well worth it.
