Having a brother who lives in Fort Lauderdale is a Canadian's dream come true! Heading south during our harsh winters is a treat. As a result of many visits I can tell you some of the more local things to do for those of you who want to get away from the high tourist activities.

Acadia80's City Tips

  • Taste the best ice cream ever at Jaxson's Restaurant in Dania, Florida, not far from Fort Lauderdale. Very unique spot. Be prepared for a line up though - it's popular.
  • Best retro candy shop - TO THE MOON in Wilton Manors. Novelty items, international candy and stuff you'll recognize from your childhood!
  • Get out of the sun for some shopping! The Galleria on Sunrise Blvd or Sawgrass Outlets 20 mins west of Fort Lauderdale.
  • Gay mecca of Florida is only a short drive to Wilton Manors. Lots of restaurants, cafes, bars. Mainly a hang out for men. Great second hand finds at OUT OF THE CLOSET.
  • Fort Lauderdale and Miami are convenient locations for short cruises to the Bahamas for low prices. Best deals off season!

Ahhh, my favorite place in Fort Lauderdale! This is a must see place for lovers of seafood, especially crab. Dress down and saddle up to the plastic covered tables and crack into a platter of assorted crabs. Delicious and so much fun!

This is a fabulous way to get a sense of life along the waterway in Fort Lauderdale. You will be amazed at the yachts and beautiful homes. One prices gives you on/off privileges and there are a number of spots to catch the taxi. Stop at one place for lunch and another to stroll along the beach. The captain will give you interesting information along the way.

Lots to see and do along Atlantic Blvd as well as the sand and surf. Very crowded during high tourist season. Parking is a nightmare there so plan to walk, take the bus or water taxi.
