I usually recommend that people stay at least four days in Siem Reap to be able to enjoy the variety of day and night activities on offer, without rushing. That being said, you can still pack plenty of memorable sights into a single day - follow my guide to the best of the bunch.

PeterJones79's City Tips

  • Tuk tuks (moto taxis) are widely available, and will take you around town for just a few US dollars.
  • Siem Reap is a very bicycle-friendly city. You can bike to most parts of the city within 5 - 15 minutes, and bicycles are cheap to rent here.
  • Whenever you go to a temple or local area, it is respectful to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.
  • Ask people for permission before you take their photos. Even though they may smile and nod, it could be a sign of discomfort.
  • Remove your hat and shoes when you enter a pagoda, office or someone’s home.
  • When you visit a pagoda or meet with an elderly person, it is considered rude to point your feet at them. Sit appropriately with your legs crossed or tucked behind you.
  • Bartering is part of the culture at the markets. Have fun with it, but don't drive the prices unreasonably low for the seller.
  • Avoid touching someone's head, particularly elders', as it is considered a sacred part of the body.
  • While it may be tempting, avoid giving money to child beggars. They are often pressured by their parents to beg instead of going to school, so giving money perpetuates the cycle.
  • It's easy to cater to all budgets and palates when eating out - you'll find everything here from street sandwiches (for under a dollar), to 6-course gourmet meals.
  • Even though tipping is not expected in Cambodia, it is recommended to tip if you receive good service. Just a few US dollars goes a long way for local employees.

Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and the richest fishing lake in the World. Don't miss the opportunity to see its floating village, Kompong Phluk, and immerse yourself among the people who live their lives around the water. In the dry season, locals can often by seen repairing their boats, and when the wet season comes, children paddle to and from school, while many adults fish for their supper.

    Tips
    • The best time to visit is from October to March, when there is plenty of water.
    • This is a poor rural village: Please be mindful of the environment.
    • Please do not hand things out to villagers - this contributes to a begging cycle and can create jealousy among the neighbours.
    • I recommend heading to the toilet before you go on this trip, as facilities there are very basic.

Quad biking is a fun way to get a preview of Cambodian life in the countryside. Ride through the rice fields and villages, either to catch the sunset or for a whole day. If you're not a fully confident driver, someone will accompany you through the beautiful landscape.

At the Cambodia Landmine Museum, visitors can learn about the inspiring story of ex-child solider Aki Ra, who was named among CNN's Top 10 Heroes in 2010 for his commitment to removing some of the millions of landmines left in Cambodia. The revenues from the museum are invested in continuing the de-mining work, and supporting the education of select disadvantaged children under the organization's care.

Beyond the Angkor Wat temple itself, you'll find yet more beautiful temples and landscapes to explore. The temples are nestled between what seems like an endless jungle of intertwined trees. Enjoy the peaceful forest and smaller temples dotting the area, or for a more local experience, ask your guide to take you to the Bayon Temple, where you can experience a monk water blessing.
