Siem Reap is a very family-friendly place and has many activities for children and adults to enjoy together, including high-quality football fields and playgrounds. My son and daughter are one and three years old, and there are plenty of things to do here to keep them busy!

PeterJones79's City Tips

  • There are tuk tuks (moto taxis) everywhere, which will take you around town for just a few US dollars.
  • Whenever you go to a temple or local area, it is respectful to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.
  • Siem Reap is a very bicycle-friendly city, and you can bike to most parts of the city within 5 - 15 minutes. Renting a bicycle here is simple and cheap.
  • Ask people for permission before you take a photo of them. Even though locals may smile and nod, it could be a sign of discomfort.
  • Remove your hat and shoes when you enter a pagoda, office, or someone’s home.
  • When you visit a pagoda or meet with an elderly person, it is considered rude to point your feet at them. Sit appropriately with your legs crossed or tucked behind you.
  • Bartering is part of the culture at the markets - just don't drive the prices unreasonably low for the seller.
  • Avoid touching someone's head, particularly elders, as it is considered a sacred part of the body.
  • While it may be tempting, avoid giving money to child beggars. They are often pressured by their parents to beg instead of going to school; giving money can perpetuate the cycle.
  • Siem Reap has restaurants that can accommodate all budgets, from street sandwiches for less than a dollar to 6-course meals.
  • Even though tipping is not expected in Cambodia, it is recommended to tip if you receive good service. A few US dollars goes a long way for local employees.

I am raising my family in Siem Reap and regularly take my kids (aged one and three years old) to Happy Hop Playground. It's filled with bouncing castles, swings and the other usual fun stuff to keep them amused while my wife and I enjoy a cold drink and catch up with friends.

Children’s pottery is a fun way for kids to get their hands dirty while the whole family learns how to make a ceramic pot. After the lesson, the staff will fire the pot for you and later deliver it to your hotel, making for a great souvenir!

I've ridden motos and done quad biking and cycling around Cambodia, but going through the rice fields and villages on a horse is definitely one of the most unique and peaceful ways to see the more tranquil parts of the country. And if you're new to horse riding, there is a European instructor who will teach and guide you slowly through the beautiful landscape.

I've seen at least seven Cambodian Circus shows so far, and the talented performers never fail to impress me with their acrobatic talent, aerial tricks and humour. There are always new storylines throughout the year, and my kids have a good laugh whenever I take them with me. It's a great show for everyone to enjoy, and the revenues are invested in training and education programs for the performers, all of whom have come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Beng Mealea is an underrated temple that is not on many tourists' holiday radar, but it is definitely the most fun temple for kids to visit. Here they can climb on the fallen temple - which is a massive jungle gym, quite literally!
