George T's City Tips

  • Usually 10% is quite OK for tipping at restaurants if you liked the food. Of course, you can be amazed, but never go over 15%...
  • Be careful at the price for taxi drives, some companies have a higher price which is shown on the front right door of the car.
  • The easiest way to travel is by using the underground, which is not very expansive and quite fast. However, the historical center must be visited by foot.

This is a magnificent place, built at the beginning of the 20th century by public subscription. It hosts an emblematic concert hall used for music shows or other public events. It is worth seeing it both from outside and inside.

If you want to have walks in the park, surrounded by tree, green grass and water, you should probably visit the Cismigiu Gardens. It was built at the end of the 19th century right in front of the city's administrative palace in French style. Even today it preserves some of its old charm.

The Old Town is practically the heart of the city, what remained of the old glory of the "Little Paris". You will see old buildings, narrow streets with stone pavement, remnants of the former residence of Walachian princes, but also pubs, coffee-shops, restaurants, night-clubs, theaters, museums and street shoppers. You should definitely not miss it!

Also, you can watch the wild birds which settle in this area during summer. There are also fast-food shops and traditional food sellers.

This is the symbol of present-day Bucharest, although its style is quite eclectic. It was built by the communist regime to host the main central administration institutions. Now it hosts the two chambers of the Romanian parliament, as well as the Contemporary Art Museum. It is a grandiose piece of building (the second public building in the world after the Pentagon) with big tall rooms, lots of marble and great view over the city. You can try it!

The square is bordered by the former Royal Palace (currently, the National Art Museum), the Romanian Atheneum, the University Library and the Ministry of Interior (former Central Committee of the Communist Party, where Ceausescu pronounced his last discourse in 1989). Its name indicates it as the place where the December 1989 anti-communist revolution started in Bucharest. You must see it!

Situated at the heart of the old town, the museum is in fact made up of the old buildings which remained from the old court of Walachian princes (mostly from the 15th and 16th century, but partially restored). You can see where decisions were made in this small principality during Middle Ages (some of them by Vlad the Impaler, called Dracula). This is, in fact, where Bucharest started, its foundation. You must see it!
