Bali is a wonderful destination for families, foodies, shoppers or those who simply like to take it easy. After travelling to Bali for more than 30 years (well over 30 trips) I can honestly say every time I visit I have a different experience. As an island Bali has certainly evolved and embraced many European and Asian flavours resulting in the establishment of some amazing cafes, coffee shops and restaurants and more recently cool eclectic bars. It certainly is a shoppers paradise and I'm not talking about the cheaper copies available in the markets but the exotic and colourful home wares and fashion that is available in many stores throughout the Seminyak and Canggu area. Don't let 'bad media' put you off visiting this amazing place, just be sensible and take all of the necessary precautions you would take when travelling anywhere else in the world. The amazing Ubud area has such a truly 'spiritual' feel and regardless of whether you decide on a day trip or to stay for a few nights you will be inspired by the vivid canvasses of the natural surrounds, green mountain side crops, rice fields with dancing scarecrows and an abundance of restaurants offering cuisine from organic to elegant.

dbucko's City Tips

  • Depending upon the type of holiday you are after, you need to really research where you will be staying. If you're after a holiday where you can enjoy great accommodation, excellent food and the ability to walk around safely at night I would recommend the Seminyak area. If you are heading to Bali for a 'party' holiday you may like to hang out at some of the louder bars in the Kuta/Legian area. It's wise to be a little more diligent in this area. One great place that I enjoy every visit is the beach front along Legian Beach. It doesn't get much better than a visit to La Plancha, for a glass of wine on a bean bag watching the sunset on Legian Beach - and the beer is very cheap.
  • If you are a 'coffee person' (which my husband and I are) you will be very impressed by some of the amazing coffee shops that now offer all types of coffee for your enjoyment. Try the Revolver coffee available in many coffee shops.
  • Although you can still eat quite cheaply in Bali, the quality and wide array of cuisine now available in many restaurants may mean that you pay similar prices to Australia for food and drink in the better quality restaurants. I can honestly say you will be rarely disappointed with a meal in Bali.
  • Ask for recommendations of reputable ground transport companies from friends who have visited Bali or your on-line friends on Trip advisor. Having your transfers and day trips organised before you arrive in Bali eliminates risk of 'over charging' and you'll know how much you will need to allow in your travel budget.

The best gelato I have ever tasted and now they are serving wonderful breakfasts, in addition to the most amazing curries for dinner. The coffee is great and the staff will certainly look after you. The kids will love it here! Don't forget to pay a visit to their newly opened Signorina Bali home wares next door.

An amazing Italian restaurant located right on the beach. I prefer a lunch visit as the view is truly wonderful but then again so is the sunset. Don't forget to try their cocktails. The service is excellent.

Visit for high tea and a tarot card reading. This is an experience, not just a restaurant. Wander around the book shop while you wait for your food. They have a wi-fi free period around lunchtime to encourage you to talk - what a great idea!

Value for money you won't get much better in the heart of Seminyak - however I wouldn't consider this to be a budget hotel experience. This hotel offers excellent service, the rooms aren't small, the pool area gets plenty of sun. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Although this hotel isn't a luxury hotel, it certainly provides you with a very nice place extremely close to restaurants, shops and beach in Seminyak.

A lovely little resort, tucked away off the main road. The villas are very large and have private pools, however the pools don't get a lot of sun. This is an excellent hotel for families who are looking for 3 bedroom villa, close to restaurants, shops and beaches in Seminyak.
